Downs traded to Braves for RHP Cory Rasmus

Were people really expecting much? Downs is a FA after the year and is a lefty specialist.I figured they'd get some decent middle reliever for Downs or something along those lines. Guy at least has strikeout stuff apparently(judging by him consistently having more K's than IP throughout his minor league career)

How has he made the pen worse this year?  This year is light years ahead of last year.  I know that doesn't mean we were very good this year, but last year was a disaster.

 

Last year our bullpen had a 3.97 ERA, this year it is 4.02.

Of course you can see how well Rasmus will perform.

There is something called statistics and they even keep those in minor leagues.

He's a career minor leaguer that has trouble throwing strikes and that has almost zero value.

He gave up 22 walks in 36 innings in AAA.

 

And yet, he only had a 1.15 WHIP.  He also struck out 48.  0.49 HR/9 innings isn't bad either.

I'm of the opinion that we have to let this stuff play out over time. Dipoto traded for Skaggs and Corbin and was widely panned for the trade but after a couple of years who looks like a genius?

Relied a bit too much on Ryan Madson, who was coming off TJ surgery. THat hasn't worked out at all, obviously. Walden being moved also weakened the pen in an effort to solidify the rotation(which also didn't work). It hasn't been a good year for Dipoto

Could he have gotten more with a package with Kendrick or Aybar? Well of course he could have. That doesn't mean the team would have been better off for it. 

 

 

I know this might be a shock to you, but just maybe the Angels do not want to trade Kendrick or Aybar.  That is especially since the Angels do not have adequate replacements for either.  Now if the Angels want to give up on 2015 than maybe trading Aybar and Kendrick would make sense.

Based on ERA I stand corrected.  Maybe I feel our pen is better because it doesn't seem that we have blown as many saves.  Our starting pitching has been so bad this year, maybe I don't notice when our bull pen stinks it up as much either.

Lindsey wil be ready soon, and thus Kendrick should be dealt by no later than July 2014 when Lindsey should be ready.

I don't get why people are mad or are calling out DiPoto. Did you really think 2 months of Scott Downs was going to snag us Cliff Lee? Get a grip, folks.

Some people are not living in reality. We gave up a mediocre LOOGY pushing 40, for a club controlled reliever 15 years younger with a little upside. Ya this guy is probably not as useful as Downs right now, nor may he ever be but this move is certainly stacked very much in our favor long term (and its not like we are going anywhere this year).

This team can't really rebuild. Not with Pujols and Hamilton and their pretty much untradable contracts.  Plus I really don't see Arte as a fire sale kind of guy.

Nothing is un trade able see Boston last year. Arte knows business just because he made two awful decisions doesn't mean he has to ride out that crap decisions who made for the entire years of the investments.
