  1. Bourjos was the kind of player the Cards need. Jon Jay wasn't cutting it in CF defensively and PB brought a speed element the Cards have been lacking. PB would probably be getting more playing time if the Cardinals as a whole were hitting. Bourjos is struggling at the plate, but so is every other Cardinal not named Yadier Molina. Jay has been hitting decent, so he has gotten more playing time. Freese, well he fits in with the way the rest of his old teammates are playing, but he will likely get a couple hot streaks this year. No real expectations for Salas though. Needless to say, I am quite excited to see Grichuk get the opportunity. The way the rest of the team is hitting, this is his chance for some real playing time in the MLB.
  2. Hey Angel fans, Sorry to see David Freese isn't hitting.. but not terribly surprising. I'm rooting for David, and most of us Cards fans are. You'll be happy to know that PB is getting benched in favor of Jon Jay. His defense and speed are impressive, but he's not hitting. I think Grichuk will end up being what made this deal better for the Cards. He is getting a lot of attention for his playing in AAA Memphis. I think Freese will have some streaks this season. He has always been a streaky player.
  3. They'll both likely see time as starters. Guys get injured, and also falter in the 2nd half. Depth is a good thing.
  4. I'd love to see Seattle field a competitive team. The fans up there have yet to even see their team appear in a WS! But a 10 year contract to anyone IMO is a bad idea. Still, would love to see it happen because it would bring some excitement to a team that really needs it.
  5. Cards have too many young arms at MLB minimum, keeping Mujica at the price it would take isn't worth it. He was very effective as a closer for most of the season but completely fell apart the final 6 weeks. If not for that final stretch, he'd probably have gotten a better deal. Rumors were that he was pitching with a back injury.
  6. I don't think anyone anticiipated Hamilton to be as bad as he was last year. They had every reason to believe he would produce because his numbers said he would. Pujols, while too long of a contract, was another one who most would have thought would be a very valuable part of the lineup for at least the first half of the contract.. probably 7 years. His 2012 wasn't as bad as most claim but he started off real slow. 2013 was an injury year. I think both could have seasons that are more typical of their careers in 2014. And if they do, Angels are pretty much a lock for the playoffs ,even with the holes in the pitching staff.
  7. This is a puzzling choice to say the least. Twins have a decent farm system and could contend in a couple years. Giving out contracts like this isn't going to help them.
  8. I think Albert is going to perform. Yes a slow start in 2012, but after the middle of May he was fine. 2013 he was dealing with the foot condition. 2014, his foot is all healed up. He's been here a couple years. I predict he is going to win Comeback Player of the Year and really tear it up. That won't make the contract any better in year 8,9,10.. but I think the Halos will get some good years out of him. And you say that Freese can't stay healthy, and its true he has been on the DL a good bit. 2012 was the first year he played a full season in the MLB. 2013 he played most of the season but started off on the DL. But he was traded for a guy who also has a history of not staying healthy. The trade was a low risk deal that moved guys who were going to be platoon players on their former teams to a place where they can be everyday players. Especially Freese.
  9. Yasiel Puig, has the tools but don't care for his attitude.
  10. Looks like he is doing better https://twitter.com/reneknottsports/status/404762049936252928/photo/1 Really great photo here: https://twitter.com/BILLGREENBLATT/status/404803926098067456/photo/1
  11. Its longer than we'd like.. sure. The market for SS is weak this year, Peralta had the leverage here. But what is the alternative? Send Shelby Miller to Baltimore for one year of JJ Hardy? Send Martinez, Miller, and Craig to Colorado for Tulo? Sign Stephen Drew who provides very little upgrade over Kozma and lose a draft pick? Cards are a better team now.
  12. Ah you are right. He was traded mid-season. Still I think he is probably too expensive for what this team should be trying to do. I doubt he gets less than 5 years.
  13. I think either option would improve the Halo's rotation and cheaper than the other choices. Garza is a nice option, but I think the Angels need that draft pick.
  14. I'm not pissed. Granted I'm not a fan of the PED issue, but this is not the first time a Cardinal has been connected to PEDs. It is what it is. Its bizarre because the Cardinals don't usually sign long contracts to guys who aren't already on the team. But overall, this is not a bad move at all. Peralta ranks #4 in OPS for SS, only Tulo, Hanley, and Reyes are better. Cards needed this offensive upgrade at SS, especially with the unproven Wong at 2B. His defense is average. Not spectacular, but not bad. He is versatle and can be played at 3B, 1B, and LF if the need arises. Cards do not have to give up a draft pick. Cards do not have to trade away Miller, Martinez, or any other young pitcher. This is a huge upgrade over Pete Kozma. With Bourjos in CF, Carpenter at 3B, and Wong at 2B, the defense looks much better than last year. Also, Peralta has been durable. Hasn't really missed any significant time due to injury. I'm not complaining about this and I like this option better than Stephen Drew. But that's not to say I think the contract is about a year too long and I'm not a fan of the PED connection. SS was our main need, and the market was not great this year. Mo did the best he could, all things considered, and without selling the farm to get someone like Tulo.
