Downs traded to Braves for RHP Cory Rasmus

Nothing is un trade able see Boston last year. Arte knows business just because he made two awful decisions doesn't mean he has to ride out that crap decisions who made for the entire years of the investments.

You're wrong. Nothing Boston traded last year was comparable to those two contracts which both have full no trade clauses to go along with their monster price tag. Those two are not tradeable.

I wasn't really all that upset about this when I heard about it, and still am not "upset" per se, but after seeing what the Astros got for Veras, I do have to question the return a bit.  Take it as you will, but both FanGraphs and Law had articles with the exact same conclusion--Braves got Downs for nothing.  The gist of both articles was that the Angels could have, and should have, received a "lotto ticket" type guy--young A baller with upside.

Our obvious need is pitching, but it seems that with many of these trades we are shoehorning ourselves into focusing on positions rather than talent.

Its a good trade, Downs being 37 and the Angels being out of it.

I would feel a helluva lot better if Butcher wasn't the Pitching Coach.  He has done nothing of significance with any pitcher in the system.  Why believe he will start with Rasmus?

I thought Walden, before he was traded, and Jepsen showed significant improvement under Butcher's regime.

Not many pitching coaches can spit shine crap into gold.

When it comes to these trades, with a farm system as bad as ours, I just think you need to acquire talent period and not worry about positional needs.  I would much rather see us acquire a raw 19 year old with high upside, even if it is an OF or 1b, then a 26 year old MR with apparently a very low ceiling.  Of course, that theory is tied to a confidence that the organization could actually develop a raw 19 year old and I'm not sure at this point I have that confidence.

I don't like the move at all. Yes, he's 37 and a FA after the season but I'd have rather kept him and tried to re-sign him after the season since it's not like he's gonna command much at all. If we got someone better then I'd be cool with it but he obviously wasn't worth someone better to other teams.

Watch out for Rasmus's Dad..  He's a former high school coach and thinks he knows better than MLB coaches and managers

His son has just landed on a team where he probably DOES know more than the manager and the pitching coach.

Can't wait...

I like trading of parts and talent to get better parts and talent.

If you have a good to serviceable lefthanded setup guy/specialist you don't deal them for a 6 year minor league player who has the ability to work at Albertson's if he isn't placed on the MLB 40 man roster by the EoY.

If you deal them then you add them as filler to another deal. Could have been a trade elsewhere didn't have to be with the ATL.

Parts is Parts the Better Your Parts the Better you are in the Standings!

Downs> a utility scrub 4AAAA player like Shuck, MIF guy we just DFA, and the other guys we have been claiming on Waivers this year.

LOL

New gloss for Rasmus = "Paper or Plastic".

I don't think anyone can fairly say if this is a bad move or not.  Downs was a FA.  He isn't helping us this year.  If we really need him we can always resign him in the fall.  Rasmus numbers do not seem to be that bad and until we see him perform we really can't call this a bad move.

Those who do  are just hate mongering.

And then you say hindsight is 20/20

Except that Walden was rarely consistent enough, and Jepsen faltered anytime he was moved into a more prominent role.

This team is finished, so I doubt this really matters. Downs was good for us, and now this GM we have has wasted his effectiveness by signing players that can't tie their shoelaces (Blanton, Hamilton, Pujols, etc.). Hopefully we saw a lot of Calhoun and Maronde/Richards down the stretch. Oh wait, I forgot our manager is Mike Scioscia so that will never happen in a million years. Silly me.

Jepsen faltered every time he got hurt. It had nothing to do with the prominent role.

Walden didn't walk a single batter the 2nd half of last season. A remarkable improvement I would say.
