  1. This is just straight weird. But I can see Nevin and Wise get the boot sometime soon and have Salmon and Finley take over as the interim manager and pitching coach. No need to have them here if Nevin and Wise were going to be here to the end of the season.
  2. 9 games is two weeks worth of games. Thats a lot. And the collapse started right after the trade deadline. So he's been a part of 50%. Some of you guys really need to stop being so defensive on certain players and get a grip on realty.
  3. I wouldnt mind if the Angels hired Mathis as Catching instructor/coach in the offseason. Couldn't hurt, no where to go but up when you are pretty much at ground zero.
  4. My hope is that the Angels adopt an approach to hitting that falls somewhere between Rod Carew's emphasis on line drives and Mickey Hatcher's approach of putting the ball in play. All the players swing out of their shoes on every swing decision including Andrew Velazquez (who should be trying to hit more like Chone Figgins but goes up there with an approach of a power hitter).
  5. The pitching has completely dropped off the side of a cliff. Can't win if you can't pitch. Catching has something to do with it as well so thats something the Angels have to look into improving for next year. O'hoppe has been around for a lot of this collapse this month so he will need to be part of the self-evaluation. It isn't the most exciting thing to watch in baseball but its the pervasive theme of the last ten years. The Angels have not been an upper echelon pitching organization. They don't develop nor acquire talent consistently in both starters and relief pitchers and the results in wins and losses show.
  6. Ohtani should be shut down. Give him some time to prepare for surgery. Hopefully, Angels will pick up the bill. Time to lose as many games as possible like Oakland and KC. Get a head start on trimming the roster fat.
  7. Additions: Offer Shohei three years at 180 million and pray that loyalty wins out. Bring in Jeff Mathis to help rebuild the catching infrastructure and instruction in the organization. Make Thaiss a 3b/1b platoon and use him only as the third catcher. Trade for a Veteran catcher from another team to be second behind O'Hoppe since it looks like Stassi is done. Add someone to help rebuild the pitching infrastructure and oversee major league pitching. Poach someone from one of the strong pitching teams like Milwaukee. I like what that organization has done year in and year out. Resign Grichuk, Moustakas, Matt Moore, Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, with Lopez taking over as closer and Estevez the 8th inning guy. I would only pay these guys their market value with Giolito for 3 years, Lopez and Moore for 2 years, and the others on one year deals. See how healthy Urshela is and resign him on a bargain one year deal if he is. Spend more money on Scouting (amateur, minor league, and major league scouting). Can we get back the good ones that were let go by Dipshit Dipoto? Continue poaching people from organizations strong in Analytics. I don't think its the emphasis on analytics that is screwing things up. I believe its the analytics that we are doing that isn't up to snuff and we need to spend more money to double down and get good at it. Find someone from one of the good organizations (i.e. Tampa Bay, Dodgers, Houston) who can be President of Baseball operations to oversee the Angels' return to glory. Let that person decide whether or not to keep Perry. Let that person have full autonomy over everything baseball-related. Subtractions: Let Escobar, Renfroe, Loup, Cron go. Move Anderson to the bullpen. And spot start him against favorable matchups (teams that struggle against left handers). Return Joyce, Schanuel to the minors to start next season. They need more instruction and seasoning away from the spotlight. Let Nevin go, because the writing is on the wall. I like him as a person but he's not the right person to bring the Angels out of this mess. Let Wise go, and stop promoting from within for a pitching coach. Look for someone who's been in pitching for a very long time outside of the organization. See Additions above. Let go of the infield and outfield defensive instructors and coaches. Either there isn't enough emphasis on fundamentals or the right drills and techniques are not used. Any way you cut it, this part of the organization needs to be rebuilt as well.
  8. I was holding out hope for one last run this year but I've realized its ridiculous to continue on. If the Angels have any decency they would shut Ohtani and Trout down instead of asking them to play tired or hurt. There is no need to push them. Its over. Wave the white flag. Play to evaluate players that will be here next year and into the future. Get a head start into next year and let go of the pitching coaches and infield coaches you don't see as being here. Cut useless players and bring up some more folks from the minors (i.e. Kyren Paris, Livan Soto, Stefanic, Mederos). We all know Nevin is a lame duck manager by now, so he can stay on to navigate the last month of this ship wreck.
  9. Time to honestly look in the mirror. Even if we had Rendon, Trout, Neto, O'Hoppe for the full year, we all can see that this team would have been undone by its pitching anyways. Just in the last week, how many times have we let the opposing team scrore 8+ runs? A real playoff team could go an entire season without giving up 12+ even once and we've done it at least three times this week alone. The pitching/catching philosophy needs to be revisited (or blown up) and reconstructed. From the minors to the majors and down to the scouting at all levels. I miss the days of Stoneman, Bud Black, and Scioscia. The pitching and catching were in sync up and down the organization and the results reflected that. It may be time to poach people from other organizations with a history of successful pitching results and consider if we can find someone to bring back the skills in catching taught by Scioscia.
  10. I think they did get a backend of the bullpen guy in Reynaldo. They have been slow to make a change though. They just went with the horse that got them this far in Estevez. He looks tired to me. Probably why he's falling off balance after his release, trying to get his velocity to 99+. He doesn't use his slider or changeup enough anymore probably because he can't get them over the plate for strikes effectively. He isn't pitching out there. He's throwing. Wish he would dial it down and go with movement at 95 and work on regaining control of his secondaries so he can use them again. I don't think the Angels should fire Nevin right now. There are still players in that dugout that are his guys and firing him would essentially be waving the white flag. Might as well shut down Ohtani and Trout at that point too. Unfortunately for him he is going to be the scapegoat firing at the end of the season though. In all honesty, my gut feeling is Nevin isn't that great of a manager or baseball mind. However, I can't validate that hypothesis with the results from this Angels season because I don't think he's the only cook in the kitchen. Hard to put anything on the man, when I believe not all the decisions are his.
  11. I have to agree here. You have to wonder who's evaluating pitching if the backup to your closer for the last few weeks of these crucial games is Aaron Loup. He's been pitching better lately, but not that much better. Also, I still have faith in Estevez as a closer eventually, but he isn't a solid one right now. I was holding back on replacing Estevez after he absolutely blew that late one against the Mariners, but enough is enough. He should be flip flopped with Reynaldo Lopez for the time being until he can get some more consistent outings under his belt. It gives the team the best chance to win.
  12. Hey, I grew up two blocks from Dodgers stadium as an Angel Fan and took shit from Dodger fans for 17 years straight. Trust me when I say, our day in the sun will come. In the meantime, feel free to vent away here. Its what this forum is for.
  13. Hey.. if it isn't obvious by now... you know you are talking to one of Nevin's relatives... right?
  14. A lot of weird stuff has happened this year. Barely able to score a day after scoring 25 runs. The endless number of games the other team has scored 8+ runs. The endless number of games a 4 run lead was blown. Two 35 million dollar players being out for weeks, approaching months. A formerly competent closer for the first half who can't get his shit together. Games where the manager makes moves like he's throwing darts at the wall hoping something sticks. Insane.
