Downs traded to Braves for RHP Cory Rasmus

This team would be better off with a GM who knows what he is doing. Stop saying Dipoto traded for Skaggs and Corbin because he was not the GM, it could have easily been the GM's idea of it and Dipoto was just there. People are giving Dipoto credit for just being in the organization when Skaggs and Corbin were traded to Arizona.

Uhh, Dipoto was the Diamondbacks GM at that point.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but why didn't we just wait and sign Rasmus in 3 months?

We basically got nothing of value.

Rasmus is a FA after this year? I'm not very well versed in how club control is determined, but I would have thought that a guy with 6.2 innings of major league ball would have multiple years of club control left.

This is a good move for both teams.

For the Braves, they have one of the best if not the best pitching staff in baseball.    This makes them even better.

For the Angels, they moved someone who was gone after the season anyway for a potential quality reliever with many years of control.

Watch out for Rasmus's Dad..  He's a former high school coach and thinks he knows better than MLB coaches and managers and with his brother Colby, had way too much influence on his son.  And a very big mouth.

Who did Beane trade for a good return that was a Downs type player?

Could he have gotten more with a package with Kendrick or Aybar? Well of course he could have. That doesn't mean the team would have been better off for it.

First, you would have to classify what you think is a Downs type of player.   I could list every reliever he has ever shipped in a trade and you might come back at me with how many of them were pending FAs.  I could list pending FA relievers and then you might find issue with that and ask how many of them were making 5 mil a year.  I could list the guys who made decent change and you might ask me to find how many were pending FAs who made money and were 37 years old.

If you google Billy Beane trades, there are a few sites that have them all listed in XLS format, if you're really interested.   But Beane has always used specialists and relievers in general to great effect in his trades..

When it's all said and done, it's not worth effort to be honest.   I just hope there is a plan in place.
