Downs traded to Braves for RHP Cory Rasmus

First, you would have to classify what you think is a Downs type of player.   I could list every reliever he has ever shipped in a trade and you might come back at me with how many of them were pending FAs.  I could list pending FA relievers and then you might find issue with that and ask how many of them were making 5 mil a year.  I could list the guys who made decent change and you might ask me to find how many were pending FAs who made money and were 37 years old.

If you google Billy Beane trades, there are a few sites that have them all listed in XLS format, if you're really interested.   But Beane has always used specialists and relievers in general to great effect in his trades..

When it's all said and done, it's not worth effort to be honest.   I just hope there is a plan in place.

you're the one who said a Downs like player so you can define it. I'd assume you would be referring to an older reliever with a comparable player profile value not just every pending FA reliever since that wouldn't be an accurate comparison. Again, you're the one who initiate this comparison and claimed we should look at how Beane had done with this type of trade. So, let's look then.

Each move DiPoto makes the angels are actually getting progressively worse

I don't think anyone can fairly say if this is a bad move or not.  Downs was a FA.  He isn't helping us this year.  If we really need him we can always resign him in the fall.  Rasmus numbers do not seem to be that bad and until we see him perform we really can't call this a bad move.

Those who do  are just hate mongering.

you guys really don't think Dipoto has been having discussions with teams for some time now? You really think that some new better deal would have shown up if they had waited a couple more days?

I gotcha.  Call out other people for wondering how they have insider knowledge to criticize decisions...

...but criticizing other posters based on your assumptions of inside knowledge.

True, I've soured on Dipoto after this season and am now thinking next year is make or break for him. He really made the pitching(starters and pen) worse than it was before

How has he made the pen worse this year?  This year is light years ahead of last year.  I know that doesn't mean we were very good this year, but last year was a disaster.

Of course you can see how well Rasmus will perform.

There is something called statistics and they even keep those in minor leagues.

He's a career minor leaguer that has trouble throwing strikes and that has almost zero value.

He gave up 22 walks in 36 innings in AAA.

No shit.  Exactly as I was thinking.

Lateral moves (at best) will get this team to the promised land.  Just you wait and see!  ;)

INB4 White knight super fans converge.  Hide!

It is a lateral move where we trade a player who we control until October to a player we control for six year.  Hell I think that would be a great move.

I agree.

If there wasn't sufficient data to demonstrate what the likely performance is of said player with 6 years of control.

In a vacuum, of course you're right.

Also, the real point isn't what we could or couldn't have got for Downs on his own vs. Downs packaged with someone...but more so that a player like Rasmus could be had later if that was so integral to us getting better.

I'd have liked to have seen more of a move to show the thought leadership behind where this team is heading...

Color me not impressed.  Not quite hating but not impressed to be sure.
