Jon Gray would be fantastic as the second pitcher the Angels get, and maybe good enough as the first pitcher. The problem is, the Rockies aren't interested in trading him.

You can't force a team to trade it's good pitching away, no matter how much you want it. Gray, Kluber and Darvish are mainly who I'm talking about.

Other teams have the Angels in a bit of a bind here. They need two very good starting pitchers otherwise their 2020 season is sunk before it even begins. They only have so much money to spend, so filling both holes via free agency doesn't seem entirely possible. The Angels need to compete and they need other teams pitchers to do it.

The Indians and Red Sox are logical trade partners, in that they have pitchers and a need to reduce payroll, but they can still ask for the moon and the stars for their pitchers and the Angels really won't have much of a choice but to pay it.

There had to be a perfect mixture of things in order for a trade to happen here. The other team needs to either be in a non-competitive situation, or able to compete without this specific pitcher. That pitcher needs to be an ace or mid rotation starter. That pitcher also should have more than one year remaining left on his contract, and a willingness to waive a NTC if it's present. The Angels have the need, but must also have the prospects and willingness to spend those prospects. And those prospects need to be of the variety that another team wants. The Padres as an example aren't going to want low upside SP prospects in AA. That does them no good.

There isn't a single pitcher that fits that situation perfectly. The closest is probably David Price. But if the Sox know the Angels have no choice but to pay the premium, and would like to, but are not required to, drop beneath the luxury tax, they can wait it out until the Angels are forced to take on more of Price's contact AND offer better prospects.

Padres definitely have the prospects to get the deal done. The original source [Boor] is  verified by the Indians’ mods. Inside the thread, another dude is claiming the Padres are offering up their #3, #8, #25 prospects plus one more.

would love to see the dodgers get fucked out for Lindor.

Why would they trade for Lindor? They have Tatis and Machado.

@tdawg87 it's highly unlikely the Padres are discussing Lindor. They need upside starting pitching.

The more the Padres offer, the more screwed the Angels are here.

If there Padres are offering Patino, Baez and Arias, then there's quite literally nothing the Angels can do to counter that. Patino is better than everyone in the Angels system not named Adell. And just in case the Indians were stupid and we're somehow more intrigued by Rengifo or Sandoval than Patino, adding Baez, who works either in the rotation or relief in the mid to upper-90's is a great equalizer. And Arias, is a solid prospect that will be a major leaguer.

In order to match that, not exceed it but dimply stay in there conversation, the Angels would need to offer Canning, Sandoval and Jahmai Jones.  That's not a good trade for the Angels to make in their current situation.

If that's truly what the Padres are offering for Kluber, then they control this market and the Angels are basically at their whim.

Those Padre prospects are for the Lindor rumor.
