Martin Maldonado traded to the Astros

Maldonado is the best Angels catcher since Bengie, the team will miss his defense.

That said, glad to see Eppler making moves like this, wish it wasn't within the division though.

Not sure in the division makes much of a difference when Maldanado is a free agent at the end of the year and the Astros/Angels aren't competing for anything this year...Astros are preparing to defend World Series titles, Angels are trying to break the record for most Tommy John surgeries in a 12 month period.

I totally agree, just never like helping division rivals, even if it has no impact on the Angels season this year.

AO, we need three times as many LHP as other orgs, so that we can split them into 3 categories:

1. Pitchers who need Tommy John.

2. Pitchers who are on the DL to get/recovering from Tommy John.

3. Pitchers who have had Tommy John.

1a. Pitchers who don't know yet that they need Tommy John.

The Astros had the talent Eppler wanted and Maldonado is a rental. This has no long term gain for Huston. It's a very good trade for the Angels.

Next, trade Valbuena to Dipoto for their last prospect plus a PTBNL.

Kyle Lewis, come on down!   Your the last real prospect in the M's org!

Also keep in mind that Sandoval was the Astros 11th round pick. This is where teams usually go high upside and overslot, similar to the Angels drafting Connor Van Scoyoc this year and Jerryell Rivera last year. So imagine how much either of these guys would rise in a system where they post a 2.56 ERA, 0.97 WHIP with 97 SO and just 15 BB's in 88 innings. That's what Sandoval has done so far this year.

wow he signed for 900k in the 11th

Rivera - 450k

Van Scoyoc - 397,500

“Chance to move quick”

Maria I. Guardado
Billy Eppler said LHP Patrick Sandoval will report to Class A Advanced Inland Empire. “Touches 94 mph, throws a solid-average curveball and slider," Eppler said. "Looks like his changeup is a real weapon. Local kid. Chance to move quick. We’ll see where it all ends

Hopefully our return is as good as the last time we traded a backup catcher to the Astros

Conger for Tropeano and Carlos Perez

One is a catcher we DFA'd before the season and the other is a starting pitcher who has yet to pitch a full season.....

But agree it was a good trade.

Maldonado will be the World Series MVP and Sandoval will have Tommy John surgery on both elbows and his left big toe.

International Money's sophomore album will flop and he'll be seen in three years camping out along the Santa Ana River.

Pretty good return for a .3 WAR catcher as a FA at the end of the season.  I don't know whether it's exhaustion or variance, but his defense according to WAR isn't as good as last season.

So with the prospect, start 2019 in double A, 2020 triple A with september call up?  2021 #4-5 starter or long man?
