He's(at best) a backup defensive C for a contending club who is set to be a FA after this season. Angels won't be getting much here.

Why?  He's a free agent after the year, and they'll have McCann back in September.  I think folks here over-value Maldonado in a trade scenario.

I'm more intrigued on what this means going forward with the catching position rather than what minor return they'll be getting from this deal. Do the Angels pursue Grandal in FA or do they look to trade for Realmuto perhaps?

Yeah, I'm not against anyone with good stuff at this point. You look at a guy like Justin Anderson. He's been an obvious bright spot this season despite being one of the most wild relievers with his control. Team needs guys that can throw hard, and less Noe Ramirez/Jim Johnson types
