I guess. But there were also big investments in Colon, Nibbles Wilson, and Escobar.

Colon before 2004 signed for 5 years/$65 million.   So in 2019 dollars, maybe a big investment.

But Nibs at 5 years/$77 million from 2013-2017 was a decent but not huge investment.

Escobar before 2004 signed for only 3 years/$18 million.

Trouts career is wasted. It was his choice. This team is fundamentally flawed in every single way.

This team is coming off a 90 loss season for goodness sakes. What would have Cole made them? A 76 win team? Where would the run support come from? A $600M off season of Cole and Rendon wouldn’t have even been enough. So how do they just “win now”?

lol ok

Man everyone is just so deflated.

Even if we get Rendon I don't think people will be that excited.

What are you talking about?

Yeah....We aren't getting Rendon either. Angels will not spend, or win.

It's not that they won't spend as the Trout/Pujols contracts confirms that. The issue is that they can't compete with the big boy clubs in free agency. The best strategy is for them to develop talent and and sign them before they hit the market.

They can, they just don't want to because they aren't willing to go beyond the luxury tax threshold.

That means they don't have as deep of resources as them. That is part of why they can't compete. You also have to factor in that the club doesn't make the playoffs all that often and these FAs may simply not want to play in Anaheim. The Angels are to the Dodgers what the Clippers are to the Lakers. Nothing sexy about playing for the Angels. I think the Halos lucked out with Ohtani because he didn't want the spotlight and extra pressure when most of the guys want that attention and fame. Not trying to be a downer but it's just my observation

It's still odd to me the urgency in which Eppler salary dumped Cozart packaged with a first rounder when no moves were imminent.  Especially with how hard he's worked to build back our farm to an acceptable level the last few years.

It basically moved our payroll from $140M to $127M (CBT threshold being $208M).  Especially if we don't get Rendon, it just seems like a shortsighted waste of a recent high pick.

I agree. Especially with such an emphasis on building within, I don’t get it.

It totally does.

But I assume when it was made, they assumed Cole was happening. Supposedly they had a meeting with boras yesterday afternoon. They likely tried to clear as much as they could going in to that meeting.
