The Angels have a million back end starters with potential. They would survive without gambling a piece of their future away for 2 years of Dylan Bundy.

No doubt - no disagreement there but the one thing they might not have right now is time.

Bundy gives them an actualized #5 right now, which Eppler might need if it’s make or break time. Something that Barria and our million potential back end guys haven’t really proven. Thaiss? Replaceable via FA. They could sign Eric Thames or Moustakas or see what happens with Walsh, Rojas, Ward, La Stella. Rengifo or Fletcher could take 3B if Jones emerges.

Or they could sign an actually 5th starter off the scrap heap for a couple million and keep the prospects. It doesn't have to be Bundy and it doesn't have to be a trade. Those are both entertaining in what has been a boring off-season so far, but they aren't the only answers to a need. And I'm not even convinced that need exists.

No, we really don’t have enough back end starters.  If we did we wouldn’t have had starters average only 4.2 innings last year.

that was partially self imposed and a result of the fact that the four guys being thrust into the rotation were 4 of the youngest starters in mlb.  they will be better.

that said, it wouldn't hurt to get Bundy but it probably doesn't help that much unless the assumption is that Heaney, Ohtani and all the young guys will give us about the same amount of innings they did last year.  Plus, as always, it depends on what the Angels would have to give up.  'multiple prospects' is very specific.  If that means Jones and Barria, then it's a tough call.

My concerns with our current crop of SPs:

  • Ohtani, best-case scenario, is still probably limited to 20-25 GS and 100-140 IP, either due to inning management, his once-a-week schedule or the number of at-bats he receives.
  • Counting on Canning to be a full-time, 30+ GS/180 IP guy is probably really ambitious given his pre-draft and recent summer injury concerns, not to mention most SPs still go through some sophomore slumps.
  • Heaney still can’t seem to put together a complete season.
  • Barria, Suarez, Sandoval, Peters, Gohara, and Pena...it’s really easy to simply lump all of these guys into the same tier FOR 2020. Rotating as #6, AAA SP, and some pen work.

Given that we don’t have a single SP on roster who is bankable for everyday use, acquiring three arms, Bundy included, still seems perfectly reasonable, regardless of the other two names acquired this winter, and even if it means sacrificing one of that last tier.

Obviousky, Bundy isn’t worth overpaying for, but I think a deal involving one or two of our fairly known prospects wouldn’t be an awful deal. Sure, they could also sign someone off the scrap heap, but assuming a deal for Bundy comes together, it’s probably because they like something there better than the scrap heap options. Eppler doesn’t give up prospects lightly.

2018 was a complete season. A successful complete season. More successful than any season Bundy has had.

Cool, he has one. Bundy has still wracked up twice the WAR, two hundred more innings, multiple seasons with 20+ GS or 30+ G, and is a couple years younger.

He’d be a good add still. Just depends on cost.

I wouldn't spend 10m on him but grabbing him for a few mil to play some 1b/OF and backup a bunch of spots wouldn't be a bad idea.

he's going to get a starting job. i think it's almost certainly going to be san diego.
