$11M for Suzuki and Gomes.

Pass

Fangraphs steamer projects those two to combine for 2 WAR next season. That’s in line with that salary. But, they have Max Stassi accumulating 1.6 WAR in only 59 games so...

I’m getting worried about the catcher situation for 2020. At this point it’s down to Castro, Maldonado, Avila maybe Martin.

I think Austin Romine is another good option for us to consider.

Iannetta was my least favorite catcher here ever. He had an uncanny ability to make strikes look like they were in the dirt.

You must be too young to remember Matt Walbeck and Phil Nevin. The absolute worst defensive catchers in all of Angels history. Walbeck could catch the ball, but was the absolute worst pitch framer. He had a knack for taking a strike on the corner and presenting it 6 inches outside. He took so many strikes away from angel pitchers. Nevin had been converted to a catcher about a year before the Angels got him. Needless to say, he was converted back to the infield after he was traded to the Padres.

Mathis was my least favorite. I don't know how many times I watched him airmail a ball into CF or LF on a stolen base attempt. Then there was the one time he threw the ball over to Trumbo at 1B while 2B was being stolen. My reaction at the time was complete shock. Then anger, then I just had to turn that game off and get off the internet.

Maldonado would be great. I like Castro and Avila too. Plenty of options on trade market still too. Eppler tends to do a good job finding reasonable catcher production cheap, Lucroy was really the only miss and he did have a pretty good offensive season going for awhile before his ice cold snap before being traded.

And yet he was still in the majors after all these years.
