ANGELS ACQUIRE LHP PACKY NAUGHTON FROM CINCINNATI

Reds receive OF Brian Goodwin from Angels

ANAHEIM – Prior to the start of today’s game, the Angels acquired LHP Packy Naughton and a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for OF Brian Goodwin. As a corresponding move, INF Jahmai Jones has been recalled from the Alternate Training Site. Today’s announcements were made by General Manager Billy Eppler.  

Naughton, 24, split the 2019 season between Adv.-A Daytona and Double-A Chattanooga, and combined to go 11-12 with a 3.32 ERA (157 IP – 58 ER)  and 131 strikeouts. He was named the Reds 2019 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, a Florida State League All-Star and MiLB.com Organizational All-Star.

A native of Boston, MA, Naughton has not appeared in a game this season, but was a member of the Reds Player Pool. He was originally drafted by the Reds out of Virginia Tech in the ninth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. In three minor league seasons, he has gone 19-25 with a 3.59 ERA (371 IP – 148 ER) and 331 strikeouts. He was named the #14 prospect in the Reds organization by MLB.com.

Goodwin, 29, appeared in 30 games for the Angels in 2020, batting .242 (23/95) with seven doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI.  In his two seasons with the Angels, he combined to hit .258 (131/508) with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. The Rocky Mount, NC native has appeared in 337 career Major League games with the Nationals (2016-18), Royals (2018) and Angels (2019-20).

Hmm Naughton wasn’t on the 60-man pool for the Reds it seems. Sort of weird that he’d be named already and the other player wouldn’t be.

I would hold off on judgements of the trade until we know who the PTBNL is.
