ANGELS ACQUIRE INF TOMMY LA STELLA FROM CHICAGO CUBS

Halos will send cash considerations or a player to be named later to Cubs

 

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired INF Tommy La Stella from Chicago in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later. Additionally, the Club requested unconditional release waivers on OF Jabari Blash for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release. Today’s announcement was made by Angels General Manager Billy Eppler.

La Stella, 29, completed his fourth season with the Cubs in 2018, posting a .266 (45/169) average while appearing in a career-high 123 games. The infielder paced the Majors in several offensive categories as a pinch-hitter (min. 50 PA) including, hits (24), average (.312) and OPS (.813) while his 11 RBI as a pinch-hitter were tied for tops in the Majors.

A veteran of five Major League seasons, La Stella has amassed a .264 (219/828) average with 50 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 94 RBI across 396 games with the Braves (2014) and Cubs (2015-2018). A 2011 8th round draft pick, La Stella made his Major League debut with the Braves May 28, 2014. He would finish his rookie campaign batting .251 (80/319) before being acquired by the Cubs during the offseason.

The Westwood, NJ native has also appeared in four different postseasons over the course of his career and was a part of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs.

Blash, 29, split the 2018 season with the Angels and Triple-A Salt Lake after being acquired by the Halos during Spring Training. He appeared in 24 games with the Angels, going 4-for-39 (.103).
