Angels hire Doug White for Pitching Coach

Gonna be real. I'm a huge fan of unusual and new approaches to training and conditioning, and implementing approaches that seem to have results - no matter how goofy they sound/look. That being said, this z-health thing sounds like a complete load of pseudoscience BS.

That being said, he's done well so far, so I have no problem seeing if he can help the Angels.

Seriously, this is going to be interesting to watch.  I like this first move.  If anything it just seems out of the ordinary.  I like that.  I have no idea if it will work - but I'm definitely paying attention.  I guess we're getting to see what Eppler can do with a blank canvas.  Kind of exciting.

What did you like about him? We had Tommy Johns galore while he was here and not one pitcher improved with him.

Without knowing much about him, I do think it's unusual to hire a bullpen coach to become a pitching coach. Having said that, I'm sure he's much better than Naggles.

Per Wikipedia (the most scholarly of sources) :
"A pitching coach mentors and trains teams' pitchers. He advises the manager on the condition of pitchers and their arms, and serves as an in-game coach for the pitcher currently on the mound."

Are the thousands of TJ surgeries our pitching coach's fault? Probably not. But its not totally crazy to suggest that he has some responsibility for at least some of the injuries we've had.

Put it like this.....

Doug White is from San Diego, Billy Eppler is from San Diego.

Doug White enjoys surfing.  Billy Eppler enjoys surfing.

Doug White tries new things when it comes to coaching pitchers.

Billy Eppler is always looking for a new way of doing things.  Looking to get an edge.

So basically, Billy and Doug were surfing, and Doug totally stole Billy's wave and he was like "woah bro" and Doug was like "my bad bro", and then Billy's like, "you like coaching pitchers bro" and Doug was like, "yeah bro, totes".  Then they got a beer and Billy introduced Doug to his bro, Brad, who is also like totally a coach.  They hit it off over some chips and guac and now he's the pitching coach.

But in all seriousness... wtf... Have you guys not been paying attention to the ways this team has gone about acquiring pitching the last several years? There is literally like one pitcher on this staff who isn't a cast off from another team. Teams are not just letting go of quality major league pitching.

I wonder if zpizza is the official pizza of zhealth...

Eppler hires a guy who runs a company called "Passion for Pitching" - Dipoto will counter by hiring a pitching coach who runs a company called "Ambivalent About Pitching."

Can't wait to see the cameras taking a look in at the Angels bullpen next season and see them all meditating and burning incence.

The 55 reclamation projects picked off the waiver wire that turned into useful arms says different.   Funny thing about guys with a history of arm issues -- they break down.

Now, now. It was sosh's fault hamilton started using again. So nagy could have screwed up these arms too.

Ohtani for example. When we got him, he only had a ucl strain. Didnt need tommy john...until he pitched here.

Aliens!

Based on data available to fans, I can't even begin to calculate if a pitching coach is part of a problem or part of a solution.  So I will just roll with whatever the front office chooses.

Doug White?  OK.

Keep Nagy?  OK.

Stan Cliburn? OK.

Stu Cliburn? OK.

Brad Lidge?  OK.

Matt Capps? OK.

Brett Tomko? OK.

Whatever.  I am sure it matters.  But as a fan I am somewhat paralyzed to any way of figuring out what is good news or bad news with a new pitching coach.

Doug White was named the Astros bullpen coach on Nov. 13, 2017. The 2018 season is White's sixth in the Astros organization, including the last two years (2016-17) as the Astros minor league pitching coordinator. White originally joined the organization in 2013 as pitching coach for the Class A Short Season Tri-City ValleyCats, where he helped lead the club to a New York-Penn League Championship title. He then spent two seasons as Houston's roving pitching instructor (2014-15). Before joining the Astros, White spent five seasons as a pitching coach in the Cardinals minor league system. From 2009-12, he was with Rookie Level Johnson City, winning back-to-back Appalachian League Championship titles in 2010 and 2011. Prior to his stint with Johnson City, he was the pitching coach for the 2008 New York-Penn League champion Batavia MuckDogs. White was also a pitching coach for manager Jack Clark at Mid-Missouri of the Independent Frontier League in 2004, and was the extended Spring Training and Gulf Coast League pitching coach for the Expos in 2003. White has extensive experience as a pitching instructor and is the founder of "Passion for Pitching", which is housed in Southern California. White is a 2002 graduate of Arizona State University and is a certified Zhealth specialist focused on enhancing movement patterns in his athletes. During the offseason, White resides in San Diego, Calif. where he spends most of his time surfing.

That is all that I needed to see. If he was with the MuckDogs, I'm in.
