Who should close?

My thought with Smith is that he's always been pretty much a setup guy.

He also has FOUR blown saves in 5 opps.

I'd try Jepsen to Smith to Morin.

While it's true that neither Smith nor Morin are heat throwers, they have different pitching styles and out pitches.

I don't think we have the trade chip to get a elite closer from outside, so Smith-Morin.........Jepsen for now, until Cam B is ready.

 

And Frieri should never close again until he has a good secondary pitch.

I'd give Morin and Smith save opportunities while, at the same time, looking into trade options. But Frieri has no business pitching in a high leverage situation - his HR/9IP is third highest in the majors of any pitcher with at least 20 IP.

Bedrosian or Alvarez should be the closer next year, but both need seasoning. I'm looking forward to seeing Alvarez later in the year. Maybe he and Bedrosian can egg each other on through competition.

I believe he was referring to Joe Smith, the reliever with the sub-3.00 ERA who barely walks anyone, gets a bunch of groundballs and a fair number of strikeouts as well.

I still like the idea of not letting the same part of the lineup see the same guy back-to-back. Play the matchups until someone looks poised for dominance.

Went to Texas-Angels games on Friday 6/19 and 6/20.

Halos won both games.

 

And, in both games, the first Halos pen guy to come into the game promptly gave up a HR to the first hitter the pen guy faced.....

 

Joe Smith is really the only option at closer.
