Latest On Gerrit Cole

December 7th, 2019 at 6:03pm CST • By Anthony Franco

Teams will be making their initial offers to Gerrit Cole in the coming days, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (via Twitter). Cole, the top free agent in this year’s class, is a near-lock to exceed David Price’s $217MM guarantee, the current record contract for a pitcher.

Which teams figure to be in on Cole? The Yankees are seemingly committed to bringing Cole to the Bronx, and Peter Gammons of the Athletic somewhat cryptically tweets that the Bombers “were not denied” in their pursuit. Nevertheless, Passan’s sources hear that the Angels and Dodgers do remain in the running alongside the Yankees as favorites for Cole’s services. Both LA organizations have previously met with the Southern California native, as have the Yankees.

I hate Jon Heyman

It's like you can see an arm shoved up him making his mouth move. Heyman was always Boras' media tool before. It's ridiculous.

The Boras camp is just laying it on thick right now, trying to get the Angels to up the offer. Financially speaking, the Yankees signing Cole would put them at least 40 million over the luxury tax alone, with this being their 2nd year over it, which means that team is about to be taxed 40%.

Meaning for Gerrit Cole alone, he is going to cost them 50 million just this year. They don't have enough salary coming off the books the next two years to decrease payroll much at all, and will be needing to re-up Paxton, which you know it's going to cost 20 million a year, which raises their payroll. And after next year, that penalty jumps up to 50%.

Meaning even if they signed ZERO free agents (Lemahiue sp? is also in need of a new contract as well), the Yankees would likely be taxed 17 million alone on that overage that Cole will cost. If he costs them 34 million a year, that makes him a 50 million dollar a year investment.

In fact, they wouldn't have the necessary money coming off the books to drop under the luxury tax again, even if they signed no free agents and only extended Paxton, until the year 2023.

If the Yankees want Gerrit Cole bad enough that they're willing to make him at minimum a 50 million a year investment, and swear off free agents altogether for a minimum of three years, then they can have Cole. Really. But you know that wouldn't happen. New York is the most aggressive organization in baseball when it comes to free agency, meaning they very well could be paying 60 million a year in overages for the foreseeable future.

I do not envision Gerrit Cole being a New York Yankee unless that team abandons any semblance of financial responsibility. Boras/Heyman can report it all they want.

Heyman is pissing me off. Joe Maddon is just as important as Andy is. Let alone Trout was probably on call just how he was when they recruited Ohtani. Trout alone just saying “here’s why I wanted to sign here and we’re a family oriented organization” could be enough for Cole to just say “cool, I’m in”.

The Yankees would need to move some serious contracts if they really want to stay under. And if they really got Cole and blow past the tax then expect them to fire sale their entire team next year.

The beloved Andy Pettite is a known steroid user too.

So what ass that jackass Andy Pettitte going to say that they won the championship about a million years ago, and how many times they have lost in the Playoffs, how many times the Angels kicked their ass and the only team with a winning record against them, that they are drug users, he is an idiot for being there.

For the Angels next meeting we should double double down. Bring Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Tim Salmon or GA (his childhood favorites) and Jered Weaver .... you know, the guy who said how much money do you need.

We filmed his press conference years ago. Check out the things this local kid had to say.

Honestly that would be amazing. We really need to show him how much we want him here.
