OC Register: Joe Maddon to interview with Angels this week

If he was looked at as an interim manager then he wouldn’t have gotten a 3 year deal.

No one is taking a one year deal. The three years were predicated on team assembly window with a caveat that if the right guy came along they could jetison Ausmus if he wasn't killing it. Ausmus was not showing success and his salary certainly wasn't a stumbling block for a buy out.

I should add that the idea they hired Ausmus all along intending for him to manage for one year is ludicrous.

The combination of Maddon becoming available and the Angels having their worst season in 20 years led to this decision. It probably doesn’t happen if only one of those things occurred.

I just wanted to quote this for the idiots that will miss it.

Yes I understand but I’m just saying they didn’t hire him just to let him go. You they factors played in.

They gave him a chance to keep his job but his performance didn't meet whatever goals they set. As Jeff pointed out, he is still managing the Angels if he excelled at his job. He may also be managing the Angels if a candidate they prefer wasn't available regardless of this season's outcome. But at no time was he guaranteed to still be managing the team for three years.

What if it happened exactly as they said it happened?

Back in August when this team went into a nosedive, Arte and Billy had a meeting and tentatively decided to really look into finding a new manager at the end of the season, someone with more experience. There's no shortage of former manager out there.

Come September, they knew it was time to go a different direction. There had been speculation for some time that the Cubs wouldn't re-up Maddon, and while the Angels would certainly be interested, this move want specifically made for Maddon.

Once it was official that Maddon wasn't coming back, Billy or Arte reached out and asked Joe if he'd be interested in managing again, or at least talking about it. Joe was interested.

This meeting just happened today. Maddon obviously fits what the Angels are looking for and the Angels are what he was looking for. They'll go through the process as planned, interviewing a few other candidates, but given their history and rapport, the other candidates would need to completely blow them away.

After the meetings are done, it'll be a very short conversation between Arte and Billy, Joe Maddon's the guy. Arte will call Joe, ask what kind of deal he is seeking, then he'll call Billy, they'll hash out an offer that meets the teams and Joe's wants/needs, and send over the paperwork. Joe will sign it and the team will throw together a press conference in a couple days.

Fletch will be there, and Joe will offer lots of quotable phrases, and make Jeff's job easier, and everyone goes home happy. Except Brad.

The Angels getting Maddon & the Ducks with Eakins. While Scioscia, Assmus & Carlyle are unemployed.

Lets be honest, were all daydreaming about Sosh pulling up through the parking kiosks on a 4 wheeler, wearing aviator sunglasses and a posse in tow, lots of engines revving before they all dismount in precision, and Arte saying "you old sonovabitch!" before signing him to 10 more years.

But sadly its not gonna happen this year.

That’s great. But there are probably only 2-3 relievers at any time who you like, so you’re only going to use them?

Not necessarily, the situation decides the pitcher. My reply is pretty basic and straight forward.

Previously Sven rode arms till they fell off (hot hand) kind of how he came up and watched Lasorda do it with the dogs. De La Rosa will always be my prime example across the last few years. Sven was spoiled due to the bullpen and closers we had in Percy and KROD. Weber, Donnelly, Shields etc.

Ausmus just hated the way he would use the starting staff and the bullpen.

Each overworked the bullpen  but differently. Sven focused on a single while Ausmus just kept running everyone out there. I think they degraded based on not being able to have roles. And then roles expanded to include an opener.

Bleacher report is saying the meeting happened yesterday, which we all knew, but states 3 other candidates will have interviews and a decision will be made maybe by the end of the week? Who the hell are the other " candidates" and why drag this along? Maybe San Diego swoops in and offers him a massive contract that Maddon can't pass up? Just get it done already.

He got Trout to sign a lifetime contract.

Your and idoit.

Eppler DID have a bad year....  Thing is, because he did it the way he did, it's limited to last year and there is no carryover other than the black eye on his record.

Ill take that over the great successes Dipoto had in 2012 with Wilson and Pujols.

This is a case where Eppler saved the franchise by keeping the greatest player of this generation and generations past, to stay with the Angels. Whatever else happened in 2019, that one signing erases any faults. Bavasi would have let him go saying he could replace him with two Goodwins.

As you said, his other dealings did not cause any long term damage and the addition of LaStella turned out to be a major plus.

Because of Skaggs death he has to spend more money on free agent pitching than he wants to this off season to compensate for an in-house player erased from the roster. That's going to slow the process of making the Angels competitive. When you realize that with Skaggs he could pick up a Cole and second tier pitcher and the rotation would be completely revamped, or just Cole and a Rendon for the offense and push the Angels forward two steps instead of one.

That’s not how I read the situation.

Holy crap people....how many hints does @Jeff Fletcher have to give for you guys to get it?

If it was up to Eppler, Brad would not have been fired.  Eppler trained Brad for a year in analytics, he then chose the coaching staff who were all analytics based and he had a goal for this team that would work overtime.  Brad managed this team pretty much exactly how Eppler wanted him to.  The results sucked due to injuries, a death and lack of talent, but in Billy's long term vision, he knew this would take at least a couple years to evolve.  Arte initially bought into the plan, but after the worst season in 20 years, he was pissed and didn't like what he saw.  As soon as it was definite that Maddon was going to be available, Arte lowered the boom on Eppler and his plan.  This is why Eppler looked and acted the way he did at least weeks press conference.
