Well, now it sure makes sense that they trotted him out in September now to test it, rather than wait until March, right?

TJS recommended formally now too. He can get the surgery now, rehab during the offseason, and DH for us next year, rather than missing all of 2019 had they waited.

And it also gives the Angels the clear direction to focus on pitching depth and upgrades.

This also clears up the DH picture next year. Ohtani will only hit, so there's a good chance the Angels will have real reason to sit down with Albert and discuss the possibility of reduced playing time.

As awful as this news is, it literally could not come at a better time. It gives the Angels a clearer offseason plan, and by testing Shohei out both at the plate and on the mound this summer after the initial June injury, they were able to now determine that he 1) does indeed need TJS and 2) is a legitimate offensive threat.

That's what I was thinking.

FRANCHISE OVER

joking aside.  This is for the best.  The worst thing that could have happened was him making 2 or 3 starts here to close the season and then get hurt in spring.  Which would have been been inevitable.  This is actually a big break for them as far as I’m concerned.
