No. The September team was one of the best the Angels have put on the field the last few seasons.

The results were not there, but the talent was. Upton in left for the long term is a tremendous improvement over the last few years.

Dude you are always wrong!!! Are you Scotty?

Then we can agree that he has not lived up to his contract.

Of course we can.

I think it is funny that you use a quote from 2017 as a gotcha, when you were wrong then, and also wrong now, about whether or not he was overpaid in a season where he was a 5.5 WAR player and made $22 million.

Just so we are clear, he is overpaid now.  Carry on.

Everybody thought it was a good deal....not a bargain but a fair price for a guy that didn’t cost much in a trade, at a time when we were in the wild card hunt....he had a solid 2018, about what you’d expect, and then injuries and (maybe) age have caught up with him....Hindsight is wunnerful.....

I don’t get the point of bringing this up in the 2020.  He was good for us the year they traded for him and the team fucking choked.  He was good the year he signed the deal and the team sucked shit.  Then he got hurt.  Then this year.  I feel zero shame about being enthusiastic about very good baseball player Justin Upton.

obviously the regression appears to have started earlier than anticipated.  Being a hater pessimist about everything doesn’t make you smart or right.  What’s it they say about a broken clock ?

Decline is a built in risk. Part of the calculus in paying for talent.

It can happen anytime because of injury, age, skill erosion, loss of confidence, a bad attitude/work ethic.  Sometimes is slow and gradual, but sometimes it's sudden and immediate.

Angels got a couple of good years from Upton, so there were expectations of a slower decline. It is possible he does recover somewhat but not likely to reach close to his career averages.

Problem is, he has locked down a roster spot beyond this season. What to do with him then?

I can't think of anything that hasn't been tried. A power bat with sluggish bat speed. A poor defensive player. Maybe try to reconstruct his swing with intensive off season coaching? Package him in some kind of esoteric  deal and pay for a large chunk of his remaining contract? Do nothing and hope he beats the odds to climb near the Mendoza line? Mostly a pinch hitter with limited platooning?

They may be stuck with him in 2021, but in 2022 he has just $28 million due to him.    They could then much more easily jettison him, if 2021 is still a struggle.
