this isn't a london problem. it's a british problem. with the mayor jonesing for more money to the public, i'm sure he's hoping to get the average brit to put pressure on parliament to fund efforts to track these threats, something they should be doing anyway given how many of them (and how frequently) have happened.

The Coyote Principle

Image may contain: outdoor

CALIFORNIA
• The Governor of California is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor's dog, then bites the Governor.
• The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie "Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural.
• He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it.
• He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $200 testing it for diseases.
• The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged.
• The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals.
• The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the area.
• The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world.
• The Governor's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. The state spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training for the nature of coyotes.
• PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the state.

TEXAS
• The Governor of Texas is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks his dog.
• The Governor shoots the coyote with his state-issued pistol and keeps jogging. The Governor has spent $.50 on a .45 ACP hollow point cartridge.
• The buzzards eat the dead coyote.

And that, my friends, is why California is broke and Texas is not.

The hearing aid industry is built on salespeople who get a significant commission. Add in high marketing costs and you get an $8K hearing aid. Same with home security, heat detectors, etc.

The way people buy has changed over the past 50 years. There used to be an army of door-to-door salespeople. Slowly that has eroded and then fell off the cliff with the internet and warehouse discount stores. Nowadays companies are selling direct to consumer eliminating high commissions, keystoning by retailers, etc. and that is giving the end user a much lower price.

The big threat to businesses these days is Amazon. Not only for online CPG purchased by consumers but also for brick-and-mortars; Imagine passing up a 7-11 convenience store because you have a Prime membership at the Amazon store down the block; Grocery stores are already in Amazon's sights. Amazon will even crush the insurance industry. Amazon is re-training Americans how to buy.

Study: Tesla car battery production releases as much CO2 as 8 years of driving on gas

Enormous hopes are linked to electric cars as the solution to the automotive industry’s climate problems. However, electric car batteries are eco-villains during their manufacturing. Several tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) are generated even before the batteries leave the factory.

This seems like a pretty crappy study, to be honest. Also, the headline is pretty clearly agenda driven.

I think you are looking for a Boogeyman that doesn't exist. If you follow the research link it takes you to Swedens department of energy. There is nothing wrong with pointing out that production of batteries have a footprint and if clean energy is the goal then the path to that shouldn't be one that reduces the gains.

Yep, total garbage that ignores reality, scaling up, Tesla's conversion to solar power as it scales up and the future:

http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/news/a27039/tesla-battery-emissions-study-fake-news/

Also, even if it were accurate, why does that goofy site you got your news from even seem to think that it'd be any sort of an issue if more CO2 was produced? That sure seems to go against the notion that CO2 production by man is irrelevant, which is kinda central to denying the existence of our influence on climate.

I really do think it's a crappy article and an equally crappy way to interpret that study.

Further thoughts, Jay?

Turn off your tunnel vision.

It's the article and study, not the website, that are important.

Speaking of tunnel vision, you've decided to completely ignore the part of my post addressing the study and article.

With that said...

You agree that the study being deeply flawed is important?

Good to know.

Most people are afraid of change. The older they get the more resistant they become. It might be a trait passed down. I'm imagining AW's resident geezers who rolled their eyes when their pops was weary of TVs, airplanes, or blacks allowed in their fave pastrami shop.

Solar tech is becoming better every year. The more electricity we get from means other than burning petroleum, the better e-cars are than internal combustion cars in every way (as confirmed by these articles.) How anyone can hold on to the contrarian (conservative, lock-step rhetoric) view of e-cars is beyond stupid.
