Yu Darvish Update...

Franchise success is generally cyclical, and the Rangers are in a down cycle (and probably will be for some time). Bad contract moves and terrible luck with injuries means they might struggle for a few years.

Their farm system will be used to improve the team either by introducing young, cost-controlled players or by using prospects as trade chips. They're in something of a competitive no man's land at the moment because of all these injuries and the fact that they can't really call anyone up until next year.

Is the farm as strong as it once was? Seems like it is weaker now than three years ago. Also, do the Rangers have the financial flexibility to add payroll? They owe a ton of money to Andrus/Choo/Fielder.

Darvish hasn't been able to stay healthy while being in the states. Him, Holland, Lewis and Profar seem to have the injury bugs. You have to wonder how Fielder will age with his body-type too. I think Texas is in serious trouble.

Last season was the first time Darvish missed a start. The Rangers limited him to 29 starts his first season and he started 32 in 2013.

Texas' prospects generally have the same issue that the Red Sox and Yankees are dealing with.  WAY OVERRATED.  Every once ina while, prospect evaluators fall in love with one certain type of prospect and when a team actually believes their judgement, that team will go out of their way to stockpile that sort of prospect.

I'm talking about the 16 year old Dominican that costs 5 million to sign and the high first round draft pick out of high school.  The result is you'll see a kid hit .280 in A Ball as a 19 year old and because he's a byproduct of a particular organization, BA, BP and MLB with idiotically rank them in the top 30.  I'm sure I don't need to remind you that a hell of a lot can happen between ages 16 and 21 when a player gets to the big leagues.

Case in point, Yankee prospect Gary Sanchez.  When he was signed for millions of dollars, they said he'd be a major leaguer by 20, and all-star shortly after that.  He was going to be the next Jorge Posada, great defensive asset, hits for power, gets on base.  All around stud.  To this day he's still ranked among the Top 50. Last season at age 21 in AA he hit .270/.338/.406, which isn't bad at all.  He'll still probably be a major leaguer, but chances are, he's not going to be a star.

Another example, Jesus Montero.  Much like Sanchez, the Yanks signed him for millions of dollars.  When he first came up he was called "The next Miguel Cabrera".  Could you imagine?  A catcher, that can hit like Miguel Cabrera!  As it turned out, despite all that power and ability to work a count and make contact, his bat was just too slow to consistently produce in the majors, his advertised athleticism was more or less average and not good enough to stay behind the plate, and his body, which may have resembled Miguel Cabrera's at some point turned soft and doughy.  Then there were the questions about his makeup and work ethic.

So when you look at all these prospects from the Rangers, Red Sox and Yanks, understand that chances are, they'll all make it to the show, which is an accomplishment in itself.  But to succeed at the show as all these scouts predicted, that's a whole other thing entirely.  So I wouldn't take their farm systems that seriously.

Except Mookie Betts and Yoan Moncada, take those guys seriously.

**** Yu, we got Pujols!

Kinda interesting how badly pujols has underperformed and darvish has blossomed into a bonafied ace, yet the fortunes of the teams as a whole are completely opposite. Texas has gone straight back in the crapper, shockingly fast, and we've won the division last year
