Angels just traded Vernon Wells to NYY

So let me get this straight, Wells is going to the Yankees and we might be paying upwards of 34 million dollars to not have him.

We are still paying a crazy amount of money for a player and won't have him as an off the bench option or as insurance if Petey or Calhoun don't pan out.

4:00pm: As the two teams haggle over money, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets the Angels primary goal is to try to get under the $178MM luxury tax threshold. Interestingly, the Yankees have been quite public about their desire to do the same.

How much would the Yanks have to pay to get the Angels at 178 million?

Would you rather have Wells and be paying him 24 million a year while Calhoun doesn't get a shot, or be paying Wells 17 million a year and having Calhoun as the 4th OF?

Also, I would say this makes it a stronger possibility that Conger makes the team.

Still question marks abound...don't say Calhoun, he is still an unknown at this point.

Unknown for what? He can play defense no question. He doesn't have to hit much to displace Wells offense. Calhoun isn't an unknown. How good his bat will be is not known yet but he has the right approach and can hit for power. He is a good bench depth player now who will develop into a quality every day player.

This should lower the Angels annual payroll by about 4 million, provide the Angels with additional pitching depth with the return they'll get, open a spot up on the 40 man roster and a spot on the team for Kole Calhoun, who gives the Angels good OF defense, a good pinch running option and a good LHB off the bench.

I'd say it's a good trade.

Have we seen enough of him to determine that? We thought the same thing about guys like Wood and McPherson too. Wells was a decent glove as well. I hope Calhoun pans out, I like the kid a lot but to call him a known at this point is a reach, but I like the optimism.

Yes. We knew Wood had some issues and those were not helped by the way he was handled. McPherson didn't lack talent he just couldn't stay healthy. Calhoun is known well enough to make him OF depth off the bench. No one is calling for the guy to be a starter right now.
