Angels just traded Vernon Wells to NYY

The Angels and Yankees are discussing a trade involving Vernon Wells, sources tell Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports (Twitter link). Passan reports the deal could be done today, but he also tweeted one important caveat: Wells has a no-trade clause and it is uncertain whether he would waive it for the Yankees.

 

Wells is owed $42MM over the next two years and Passan tweeted the Yankees will receive some money in the deal, but the amount is not nearly as significant as one might think.

Frankly, I don't see why Wells accepts this trade.  There is nothing to gain going to NYY, especially this year.

I think what Buster Olney meant to say is "Teammates are excited about the possibility of Wells being traded to the Yankees"

This keeps getting better. Sounds like its virtually a done deal and they're just hammering out numbers. My guess is the Angels still pay $25-30MM of the $42MM remaining. I can't see even the Yankees wanting to spend more than $10-15MM on two years of Wells.

I would caution that the Skanks always over value their prospects so they can maximize any trade value, but hell, it would be a good deal if the Angels traded for just about anyone/thing.

Sounds about right and a good move for the Angels, but not sure why it causes so much excitement with Angels fans.

Maybe, maybe not. Wells' numbers will get better in NY. I could see him hitting .250/.320/.450 with 25 HR. Couple that with pretty good defense and all of a sudden he's a 2 WAR player.

Yeah I was thinking maybe 30 million of the 42 would be about the best Angels could do... wonder if they are taking on money in return? Probably doubtful.
