You're all over the place here.  On one hand, you seem to be adopting the "guns kill people" argument loved by the gun control advocates.  On the other hand, you're saying gun ownership is a right. 

 

There's literally thousands of ways to kill people if you really wanted to -- some more convenient than others -- so I don't see the point of placing the burden on gun owners.  If you're going to hold to that logic, why not call out those who have cars, knives, baseball bats, hammers, axes, rope, plastic bags, common household chemicals, etc, etc.  All of these things have been used in one way or another to kill people as well.

 

Sorry if I'm not fitting into one of your predetermined sides.  There is no doubt gun ownership is a right.  There is little evidence that gun control laws work much at all. 

 

There is all the evidence in the world that if you use a gun on somebody there is a solid chance they will die.  I didn't say only gun only carries with it responsibilities.

 

Living out here in Montana, children are taught young on how to use a gun properly and to respect what it can do.  They are always taught how to own them responsibly.  If people want to carry guns on them, it would make sense to not put yourself into a position to have to use it.

Common sense might tell you that if you first assume that a violent confrontation is going to occur and I don't think that is a reasonable forgone conclusion. The same could be said about me arming myself with a bat. If a violent confrontation had occured, it wouldn't have ended well and there is certainly a possibility that could include death. But then it isn't reasonable to assume that just because one arms themselves that it's going to end badly.

A couple things. 

 

Guns have considerable value outside of actually firing them.  People don't generally mess around if they have reason to believe an adversary is carrying a gun.  I could maybe fault Zimmerman for not pulling the gun out sooner, not to shoot, but to give Trayvon a chance to back off.  Flashing the gun early might have prevented the physical altercation. 

 

What do you mean by "it would make sense to not put yourself into a position to have to use it" practically speaking?  The way I interpret it, this presupposes an impossible scenario whereby a person could accurately predict a dangerous situation ahead of time.
