Well, that's a nice group of players, don't get me wrong. But is it something that fits the Angels? They're in decent shape offensively without Rendon. Is that really where they should be spending their money? And if they do sign Rendon, do you simply trade La Stella? I mean there's so much infield depth on the market right now that he doesn't get you much in return, and you're certainly not demoting David Fletcher into part time duty. He's one of the best players in the team and is young, inexpensive and versatile. And La Stella in part time duty really isn't fitting if the offense skill set he showed last year.

And like both Ryu and Price, as the #2/3 options, behind a front line starter which the Angels clearly need. But that pitching staff is built on cracked glass. A rotation fronted by Ryu, Price, Ohtani and Heaney? The chances of injury there are super high.

So it's a good plan.....just not a good plan specifically for the Angels.

But it might be the best plan left on the table for them.

It seems they have money to spend, and this combination or something like it may be the best they can do without eating into the farm in a big way or signing Cole and/or Rendon to something that closes multiple doors.

If we somehow added Rendon/Donaldson, Ryu/Bumgarner, and Price and all it cost us was basically Will Wilson...I would say that’s a pretty damn good fallback.

Strasburg’s deal really changed the whole complexion of the Cole bidding.

  • Rotation:
    • Ryu/Bumgarner
    • Price
    • Ohtani
    • Heaney
    • Bundy
    • #6 rotation between Canning, Sandoval, Barria, Suarez, Peters, Gohara
  • Lineup:
    • 2B Fletcher
    • CF Trout
    • 3B Rendon/Donaldson
    • DH Ohtani
    • LF Upton
    • SS Simmons
    • 1B Pujols/La Stella
    • RF Goodwin/Adell
    • C Castro/Maldonado

That's not bad at all. Certainly a competitive team, and not a total logjam financially.

Eppler had raved about Thaiss at 3B for a while now. I don't think he's getting traded. They probably see him as part of the 1B/3B rotation at the nig league owner now that there's a 26 man roster.

That or he’s talking up his value in case he does trade him. If we sign a Rendon or Donaldson, it’s gonna be harder for someone like Thaiss to find ab’s any time soon.

By moving Cozart's salary the Angels can sign both Cole and Rendon on back loaded contracts and stick around the $200M-$205M mark depending on how they extend Simmons and any other additions they make. Luxury Tax number will be higher (think $220M-$225M) but that is a minor penalty.

They are in it to win it.

Right - this is more of a ‘if Cole signs with NY’ thing. It’d be awesome if we got Cole and Rendon, but also definitely the unlikeliest combination, and still only adds two players when we might need three.

How do you figure Bumgarner is a #1? Do you just have them in no order?
