How do you do both? How do you sell off assets who will help you win games and buy assets who will help you win games. Seems counter productive.

You could sell guys like Kole, Lucroy, Cam, Robles for prospects.  And trade prospects for cost controlled pitching that will be here beyond this year.

You sell off the assets that are not in the long term plans.... Lucroy, Goodwin, some of the AAA middle IF depth, possibly Calhoun ( kind of hesitant on this one)…. and target players that can help both short and long term by either being controllable beyond this season or by being added to the pot to go after the SP we need so desperately. I would have zero issues trading Goodwin and Lucroy to get a player that can be added to a deal to get Ray/Greinke, Boyd, etc.

But Goodwin is under control for a while and is cheap and good. How is that not in the long term plans? And how does trading Calhoun Goodwin Lucroy help us win this year? That seems more like a move for long term rather than winning this year.

I do only disagree on Goodwin, if they trade Calhoun.    Otherwise, someone else can take the 4th OF spot.     Especially if someone inexplicably wants to send a solid starting pitching prospect (a #4 potentially down the road?) in exchange for Goodwin and his .800+ OPS and OF versatility.

We aren't winning this year.

I think the OF prospects we have coming up fairly quickly will out perform Goodwin in short order. Calhoun (while I love his play) is almost assuredly not having his 14M option picked up and Lucroy is not in the plan beyond this season.  If we can acquire virtually any SP with control beyond this year that can win 4-5 starts from here on out is a huge addition to winning this year and beyond.

Because Adell, and to a lesser degree, Marsh, Hermosillo, Lund, Ward, Fletcher, and Rengifo.

He's cheap and he's been good, but he's also out of options - which always complicates bench players and limits their value - and they should sell high.

They should be both buyers/sellers in the next 24 hours.
Move Goodwin, Bour, Cahill, Lucroy (or another catcher) if something decent is offered or the salary can be offloaded for the more costly guys, and entertain offers on Calhoun, Robles, Noe, and Bedrosian.
With that acquired depth (DEPTH, not prospect talent, because those guys won't bring much back), should make it easier to part with some pieces for a controlled #2-#3 SP to help next year. If it helps this year, cool!
And then, if that happens, if you can nab a #5 rental vet SP like Roark for next-to-nothing, go ahead and do that too and see if it helps turn '19 around. Maybe gives you a better shot at re-upping them in the winter if they do a solid job.

when you go 1-4 vs. the orioles and tigers dropping 5.5 games back of the second wild card, you have to be realistic of your chances for winning this year.  You can't plan for a miracle to happen.

As far as moving Goodwin, it's all about what you get in return.  If someone is willing to overpay and give up a couple solid prospects then you go for it.

The Angels need to continue buying prospects that can develop into more talented players by selling established major league players not in their long term plans.

i think this is exactly what they hope to do, and what they need to do.
We still need a C, and perhaps 2 arms, at least one pf those 3 is going to need to come in trade.

They just can't trade 2 or all 3 of those relievers (Undertaker, Noe, and BedRock Jr.).      Who will be left then to pitch key relief innings in 2020?

No, I don't think they'd part with 2 or 3. But I think one of those certainly might be dealt. Maybe two if the return was nuts, and Eppler was ready to let '19 go and was comfortable with his 2020 plans.

Are we selling or buying? Are we trying to make a playoff push or are we calling it a season?

Whats the plan of the Angels?

If we get something back for Lucroy we will call ourselves buyers so the fan base doesn’t go apeshit.
