when you go 1-4 vs. the orioles and tigers dropping 5.5 games back of the second wild card, you have to be realistic of your chances for winning this year.  You can't plan for a miracle to happen.

As far as moving Goodwin, it's all about what you get in return.  If someone is willing to overpay and give up a couple solid prospects then you go for it.

5.5 games out with 2 months to play seems really far out of contention to you?

They may not be that far out contention but the pitching just isn't there and compared to most of the other teams in the hunt they're at a disadvantage.  Guys that don't figure into next years plans should absolutely be moved if there's interest in them.  Better to get a prospect who has something they value than to hold onto someone they're going to let walk.

I just hate punting on another year especially when this team has so much talent. It just feels like a waste especially when we are still in the hunt. It isn't like we are 10 games out of the wild card or anything. We add a good starting pitcher or two we can be right in this thing.

Moving up 5.5 games is a lot harder than you seem to think it is.

Very real chance that if Lucroy (or Bour, Cahill, Goodwin) get dealt, it could be for our old friend cash considerations.
I'm not expecting much, but that's also why I think there's a good chance a couple do get moved.

Eppler tends to make good use of cash considerations too...Felix Pena was a cash considerations deal, I think.

Angels have 50 or so games left. 5.5 isn't much. Especially when we are playing the teams in front of us a lot. We are down 2 touchdowns with 20 plus minutes left in the football game. It wouldn't be unheard of to come back and take the wild card spot.

Are we selling or buying? Are we trying to make a playoff push or are we calling it a season?

Whats the plan of the Angels?

After losing 3/4 to Baltimore and dropping the first to the Tigers, it should be rather apparent that there is NO major league pitching talent on this roster. We sell.

This team has talent but they also have one of the worst rotations in baseball.  Adding two starting pitchers is a need but it won't come cheap and they're a long shot to do damage in the playoffs should they make it.  If you get to the playoffs anything can happen but the reality is at a point they should look towards next year and beyond because the odds are against them this year.

Your crazy if you think 5.5 isn’t a lot in 50 games.

We have to catch and outplay Boston, Oakland, Cleveland and Tampa. We don’t have the pitching to get that done.

It’s more like being down 20 points with 5 minutes to go.

And Oracle memory incoming....the only time I remember a team coming from similar margin back and that little time left was an Oregon vs UCLA game in 1970 at the Coliseum.   Oregon was down 40-21 with 4 minutes left, and won 41-40.   Dan Fouts was a sophomore starting QB on that team.

We return you to your non-Oracle programming.

How do you do both? How do you sell off assets who will help you win games and buy assets who will help you win games. Seems counter productive.

Angels are buyers for 2020.

Their offense and BP is solid but can slump at times...the rotation as it is, though, makes it extremely difficult to compete with the likes of Boston, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Minnesota, and Oakland.  The Angels are in that weird in-between area where they can beat the best team in baseball for 2 games on the road and then lose 4 out of 5 at home to the worst league has to offer.  It doesn't mean you stop trying to win but it means you try and leverage the pieces that aren't going to serve you next season into assets that will.

Lucroy was highly coveted by the A's pitching staff but, here, he's been pretty meh. Smith/Garneau can handle the position fine...if they can get what they got for Maldonado, you do it.

Goodwin is having a career year, is cheap, and is controllable but is also 28 and his dWAR is not great.  If someone is desperate and offers you a young, projectable AA starter with mid-rotation potential, you go for it.

On the flip side, you don't have to do any of this...you can keep both with Goodwin going into next season as a buffer between Adell coming up and losing Calhoun after you decline his option, and Lucroy leaving as a free agent.
