Today, the #Angels traded INF C.J. Cron to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for a player to be named later.

Well that’s a shocker!  I guess they think Cron is better than Dickerson..?

Or perhaps the Rays really, truly need to reduce payroll?

I strongly suspect that this very late moving market has really hamstrung the Rays to the point that they were forced to make a move. I find this very strange to be honest. My only thought is that perhaps the Rays have substantial interest from other teams on Dickerson but none of them were engaging them heavily to move it forward and by DFA'ing him they will force interested teams to move now rather than continue to wait the market out.

Also I think Dickerson is a better hitter than Cron so despite the $2-3M the Rays are saving this is odd.

I still think we might pick up a hitter that can play the corners in trade. Matt Carpenter or perhaps Brandon Belt.... a different 1B type guy who might have flexibility elsewhere. Jake Lamb perhaps?

Or it could just be Valbuena and that will be okay.

Hopefully, this means that Thesis is close. I have no trust in Valbuena's bat and Pujols Legs.

This is odd for the angels too. Now Pujols has to play a lot more 1b unless they are confident with Valbuena there.

While I wanted Cron to be something more, he wasn't really an ideal fit on this roster.  We already have two guys who will be manning 1B (Valbuena, Pujols).  Cron would have been fine if he had options, but he did not, so he was going to be on the roster the whole time.  As others have pointed out, he has reverse splits, and historically hits RHP better than LHP.  If he were a true LHP masher, then we probably would have kept him.

I agree. Can't quite figure this one out. Doesn't seem like an ideal plan to have Valbuena as the primary first baseman.

I agree.  They have to bring someone in, you can't just count on Valbuena.

Mike Moustakas?  A one year deal?  Maybe 3 years and this year he is a utility guy and then 3rd base next year.
