I want Cespedes. He's not great but he's certainly good. He solidifies an absolute need and plays solid defense. His price should be around $16-20 million a year. I would also consider Jay Bruce if they can trade someone that makes money and the Reds eat money to keep us under the luxury tax. Or if Arte has a change of heart get Bruce and Phillips. Bat Phillips 2nd, Bruce 5th.

If you can get Cespedes for something like 4/72, then trade Santiago for a cheap rarm or two, the luxury tax hit would be minimal.

If you could find a team to send you two Tropeano-like arms for Santiago, the pitching depth would also increase and would be far cheaper going forward.

That's a brutal deal for Ian Kennedy.  The dude couldn't keep his era below 4 in one of the best pitchers parks in baseball.  And he's entering his 31yo season and moving to the AL.  This is going to be one of the worst FA contracts in baseball within a year.

The Davis deal is about what I expected.  Boras always gets his money.  Davis will be solid there for at least 4-5 years.  He won't earn that contract, but Bmore will have a stable middle of the lineup bat for several years.

Basically with no one decent being available next year teams are overpaying this year

Or salaries structures are being upgraded by teams who are feasting on lucrative TV deals, and the overall financial success of the sport.  These may be the new levels, and things won't get any cheaper in the next few years.  If the overall economy declines, that could reverse things though.

Royals overcommiting to Ian Kennedy is commitment to winning now

That the Royals committed at this level indicates one thing pretty strongly: They know their window to contend won't stay open forever. Another two or three years is probably the most realistic expectation, and after getting a taste of championship glory last season, they're determined to make those seasons count.
