I really have a feeling we are gonna manage to pull off a CJ or Santiago trade and get a middle of the road LFer that none of us have even considered. Any guesses?

That would probably be a very bad idea to trade one of CJ or Hector.  We dont have the rotation depth to be trading away starters.  Outside of Richards, Heaney, Hector, and CJ,  the next batch of starters are Shoemaker, Weaver, Tropeano, and Skaggs.  Between those 4 its very likely 1 or even none of them are reliable starters next year.  If CJ and Hector can both give 150 quality innings of around a 3.5 ERA, that would give us a chance to win the division.  Theres too many questions marks in the rotation to be trading starters.

Do we really want to give up a solid 1st round pick for Fowler?

At least Austin Jackson doesn't require that to be given up, and is better defensively than Fowler.

considering his last 2 seasons, 267/311/385/696 and 256/308/347/655 lines.

Fowler would be a much better option.  jacksons 2012 season seems more of a fluke than a ceiling.

Personally, I'd rather find a lefty hitting LF via trade that wouldn't cost a lot in exchange (and no draft pick lost).

Going with Calhoun as the only true lefty hitter in the lineup will allow righties to feast on the lineup.

If only Cowart could hit enough from the left side, and Escobar could play 2B.

Upton may be willing to do a 1-year contract.

Makes some sense given the FA market next season. He could be the top prize next year.

Not sure I would want to give up a 1st round draft pick for Upton on a one year....wasn't crazy about it on a multi-year deal but one year of him for a 1st rounder is pretty steep....

Upton on a one year means we can turn right around and offer him a QO next year and get that pick back. Yeah, it still sets us back this draft, but a one-year deal and QO negates that loss a bit.

Or Angels could flip him for prospects at deadline if they're tanking.

Fowler has no power and put up all his numbers in Coors.  No thanks.

Considering he put up a 276/375/399/774 numbers in Houston.  His numbers may translate better than power hitters from Coors.

And since he will be the #1 hitter.  IMO, power numbers are overrated.  OBP and pitch per PA, in which he was a 4.08 last season and a career of a 4.04 with a MLB average of 3.82, is a nice stat for a leadoff hitter.

Yep!

Having Fowler leadoff would be nice. This lineup wouldn't look so bad.

LF Fowler

3B Escobar

CF Trout

1B Pujols

RF Calhoun

DH Cron

SS Simmons

C  Perez

2B Giavotella

I think Parra is as reasonable as Fowler. Parra's advantages are that he won't cost a draft pick and his defense is a little better, but the OBP is less.

At this point in the offseason, since the Angels don't have the prospects to trade or the willingness to spend, they're not going to acquire a game-changing impact bat. So instead of focusing on one player's individual stats (like what Fowler may do) you focus more on the role they will play, and how they fit other pieces.

Both Fowler and Parra bring a left-handed bat that slots into the top of the line-up, one with better OBP than defense, one with better defense than OBP, but skillsets that play well to both. And both bring some semblance of speed.

Individually, they may not light the world on fire, but when you stack Fowler and Escobar's OBP together at the top of the line-up, or Parra and Simmon's defense to the club, and replace our 2015 bench with our 2016 bench, things can improve quickly.

Market Notes: Davis, Parra, Angels, Span
  • Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, on the other hand, hears that the Angels are “still not really involved” in the top of the free agent outfield market. (Twitter link.) That includes Parra as well as players like Justin UptonYoenis Cespedes, and Dexter Fowler. Fletcher adds that he sees a trade for a lower-cost option, such as Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies, to be a more realistic outcome.
