Taylor Ward

C, FRESNO STATE

Ward is one of the better defensive catchers in the draft, and scouts all saw him play that solid defense for Team USA last summer. He'll post pop times in the low 1.9s and has an easy plus arm to go with decent receiving skills. He doesn't have a great feel for hitting, though. His swing is a bit stiff, the bat speed is on the fringe, and he lacks strength and whip in his wrists. That said, things are clean and simple enough that he should hit enough to profile as a big leaguer, even if it's as a glove-first backup.

This is what happens when you have the smallest signing pool in the draft.

Under the current rules the fact that the amount of draft bonus money changes so drastically based on regular season record is absurd. I can understand giving losing teams higher ordering in the picks, but the falloff in slot money should be way, way more gradual than it is.

Great. So the front office was ecstatic over Austin Hedges II.

So this is the guy that the Angels brain trust was dancing about?
