Didn't Ric Wilson say they were drafting the best player available?

If this is the org's idea of the best player available, and not just some kind of angle to save draft bonus money, then that might actually cast some doubt on the orthodox belief on these forums that the most disastrous trades and free agent signings over the last several years were done at the sole insistence of Arte Moreno over the objection of his baseball operations executives.

of course I don't know where this guy was on anyone else's board, but the only thing that make me scratch my head is that the Angles think they know something about this guy that everyone else missed.  It's works once in awhile and when it does you sure look good, but it's a dangerous game.

I guess I was hoping for a high upside bat and not a defensive minded C as our first pick.

again, I am fully aware of the fact that I don't know shit.

It seems they did the same thing with Baldoquin.

Thing is, if the Angels think they knew something nobody else did, why did they seem so surprised and ecstatic that he was left on the board? If every major pre-draft poll had him around 70th, nobody in the angels FO should have expected him to be picked up ahead of them in the first round.

That does make little sense doesn't it. Maybe they were concerned that some other team had the same feeling about this guy?

Yeah, that's what I don't get either.

Yeah, I got a good laugh out of that too.

@MikeDiGiovanna: More BB America on #Angels pick Taylor Ward: "Scouts have doubts about bat ... has decent pull power but lacks a natural feel for hitting."

Iol

He'll fit in perfectly with the other shitty hitters in this organization. What a mess. Good god

Quote from Wilson:

“We are very excited with this selection and this is a great pick for us,” Angels scouting director Ric Wilson said in a statement. “We’ve scouted him all year long and have gotten to know him and feel very comfortable having him join our system. He has a tremendous throwing arm and we think he’s going to be a premium big league catcher. We’ve always liked his skill level and what he can do on both sides of the ball.”

Sounds like tunnel vision.
