Refinery outages and delays in Torrance repairs cause higher L.A. gas prices

Los Angeles-area gasoline prices rose over the last week and could tick even higher as a result of unplanned refinery outages and delays in the Exxon Mobil Torrance refinery’s return to full service, fuel experts said. Exxon Mobil has restored 50% to 75% of the Torrance refinery’s capacity, helping...

Well that doesn't sound like complete bullshit.

California attorney general subpoenas oil refiners in gas-price probe

State Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris has issued subpoenas to oil refiners as part of an investigation into unusually high gasoline prices in California during the last year. California drivers paid pump prices that have been as much as $1.50 higher than the rest of the nation since last summer.

Will Exxon Mobil's sale of its Torrance refinery lead to lower gas prices in L.A.?

Exxon Mobil has completed the sale of its Torrance plant to a New Jersey oil refinery company, a $537.5-million deal that brings a new player into the California market. PBF Energy is the first new owner of the Torrance plant since Mobil Oil acquired the facility in 1966.

I want to know why they always have these "unplanned maintenance" shutdowns that cause a huge spike in prices.

Are California refineries so poorly built and maintained compared to the rest of the country, and why is that?

It goes along with switching to summer or winter blend. If we were in Illinois where the summers are hot and the winters are brutally cold, it makes sense that you would need to do something to the gas to handle the extreme temperature swings. But that's not our case here, and always feels like a lame excuse to unnecessarily raise our prices.

Having been in the industry, it's a billion dollar a day industry at that, there is no excuse and simply greed. The only thing people don't know about are regulations and the costs for them.

Ps. When the refineries here go down, it's not because they go down, it's because of our consumption. Let's be honest, they can say they are shut down due to maintenance and no one here will go there and check. They don't care and nor should they. You are going to pay regardless.

With petroleum, it's not about the temperature, it's about the amount of light in the day.  Winter blend is cheaper but tolerates less light.

No offense, but that doesn't sound any more convincing.

Time to revive this thread.

Oil is plunging today, and has been declining in price for some time now. Down to $43.

Gasoline is still around $3 a gallon and has not budged in months. Of course.

Murphy's law.  For every penny you save.  Politicians will try and tax to take that penny away.

the most expensive gas in glendale is still at the chevron. that clown is charging 3.69 for regular, 4.09 for medium grade, and 4.19 for super. he doesn't have much business, but there are still people buying gas from him.

i'm always tempted to stop there and tape directions on each pump for how to get to arco, where they're charging 2.95.

The worst is the Barstow gas station.  The one across the street from the McDonalds as you get off the offramp.  They are always $1 - $2 higher than the Circle K 2 blocks down the street.  And yet people still fill up there.
