Bourjos traded to Cardinals

yes, because when he is healthy he is a considerable value. If he doesn't stay healthy, you have Calhoun to take his place. If he does stay healthy you either trade him for a higher value return or you trade someone else.

That's what they did in 2013.  After 2012 people were talking about him bouncing back and either being an every day player or increasing his trade value.  Calhoun's success made their decision after 2013 easier.

No shit Sherlock. But where do you play Calhoun? Would you rather see Bourjos out there over Calhoun? I certainly wouldn't.

Chuck with all due respect this is why I wanted to trade Trumbo, whose value is high right now, so that we could have Bourjos in CF while Calhoun swapped in and out with Hamilton between DH/RF.

I think if this trade holds true (Bourjos/Grichuk for Freese/Salas) it was a losing one for us in many ways. In fact I'd go further and say that the fact they want to keep Trumbo over Bourjos shows a real lack of faith in Hamilton and his power staying consistent (thus the need for Mark's power in the lineup).

and he did bounce back and he was an every day player, then he got injured. Then he got hit by a pitch. Then he tried to come back too soon and play through considerable pain in his hand. He had a run of injuries but these are not the type that spell perpetually injury prone.

He's been in the bigs since 2010 and the last 2 years he's missed considerable time.  Where the Angels supposed to trot him out there in 2014 hoping he stays healthy, produces and his value increases while keeping a player they supposedly like in Calhoun on the bench?

I think it says a lot that the Cardinals are more than willing to take this risk.

Good thing we got Mr Ironman at 3B now right?

FYI..

2009 - Freese was expected to be the team's starting third baseman, but was quickly passed over by Brian Barden and Joe Thurston.[14] He was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on April 20, 2009 to make room for newly acquired reliever Blaine Boyer.[15] He later had surgery to repair a left ankle injury that hampered him during spring training.[1] He missed two months of the season.

2010 - Freese began the 2010 season as the Cardinals' starting third baseman. However, he suffered a right ankle injury in June. This injury required him to have two ankle surgeries and ended his season after 70 games.[1]

2011 - Freese was projected to start the 2011 season,[17] and he was named the starter on Opening Day, despite suffering minor ailments during spring training.[17] He started off the year batting over .320, but was hit by a pitch that fractured his left hand, and missed 51 games

2013 - After suffering a back injury in spring training and starting the 2013 season on the disabled list, Freese struggled at the plate for much of the first six weeks of the season, having only four RBIs by mid-May

And apparently the party line is that his back injury lingered throughout the year and caused his "down" year.   No problem, back injuries are never a long term problem.

Freese can at least get on base -- so he's not a total POS.    But this is a bad start to the offseason.

I have been as big a DiPoto fan as anyone, but I'm not less confident in his ability to turn this team around then I ever have been.  Whatever Bourjos' perceived value is, it makes no sense to trade him and further deplete an already barren farm system for what they got in return.  I guess when you demand that you win now at all costs, this is what you get.  Could be a downright frightening offseason.
