Bourjos traded to Cardinals

I guess I'm in the minority here and like this deal. Oh well, some of you valued Bourjos higher and I get why you're butthurt.

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but next year I think it's reasonable to expect Bourjos to put up a higher WAR than Calhoun, Trumbo, & Freeze, and potentially higher than the two lowest combined (though I won't predict that much).

The only person I was cool with getting traded is Trumbo, because I think he's overvalued.   But now I fear there's a cleaning of house, and several players will go.

Why couldn't Calhoun have DH-ed (or played right) and Trumbo get traded? 

 

Trumbo and/or Kendrick can still be traded. The Angels can sign a DH, plus we have Cron as a future DH as well. Lindsey and Yarbrough waiting for their chance.

I get that Bourjos right now doesn't have a ton of value, but I think including Grichuk is stupid.

Calhoun is a better hitter with a canon for an arm in RF. The Angels are very high on Calhoun. I'm wondering if you watched him play at all last year and noticed we had Mike Trout roaming CF.

Loss of Bourjos isn't the issue for me, it's the rest of it. Giving up Grichuk and getting just Salas back as the pitcher in return stinks. Farm is still weak and they deal one of their better prospects for a middling relief pitcher

 

I also worry about the team defense since Freese isn't good at 3B with the glove. Gotta improve the pitching AND the defense. This trade did neither.

Cardinals Continue Being Smart, Acquire Peter Bourjos

To get Bourjos, the Cardinals sent Anaheim third baseman David Freese and reliever Fernando Salas. Salas is basically nothing, so this can be seen as essentially a Freese for Bourjos swap from the Cardinals perspective. And it’s hard not to love that exchange for St. Louis. Freese has value and is a decent buy-low candidate for the Angels, but his offensive performances have always been heavily driven by BABIP, and his defense went from okay to terrible last year. Even if you expect a nice rebound season, Freese still projects as an inferior player to Bourjos, he has one less year of team control, and will be more expensive in his final two seasons of arbitration. Oh, he’s also older, and not exactly the picture of durability himself.

It’s hard to see any area where Freese is better than Bourjos. This trade will be sold as speed-and-defense for power, but Bourjos actually has a higher career Isolated Slugging mark than Freese does. This is an average hitting elite defender for a slightly above average hitting meh defender, only the meh defender costs more and is closer to the end of his career.

The Angels needed a third baseman, I guess, but they traded a good player for a worse player who costs more. Anaheim keeps spinning their wheels, while the Cardinals keep marching on towards sustained excellence. Some things really do stay the same.

It's a good deal. Plus many forget Peter is afraid to steal bases.

I think some of you are overvaluing PB.  As much as I like the guy and wanted him to be a starter whether it was a freak injury (HBP) or his legs he missed time or played through injuries that hurt his production.  The Angels traded from a position of strength (OF) and got a 3B and a reliever both of which needed to be improved.  PB wasn't landing the Angels Wacha or Martinez and I don't think Grichuk was landing a starter either unless he was paired with someone like Trumbo or Kendrick.
