I'd imagine the Angels more or less expected that Vargas would sign elsewhere, but I think the fact that it happened this early in the offseason could hurt in that takes away some leverage.

The Angels should have thrown Vargas a qualifying offer but for some odd reason the Angels don't believe in getting draft picks.

He would have made 6 million more if he accepted it. I still think he would have, personally.

4/$32?  that's not a bad deal at all.  Worse case, you could trade him midway through the deal.  Because that contract isn't prohibitive at all to probably every team in the league.

If he accepts, Halos would have barely anything else left money wise to bring in pitching. Vargas back for 1 year wasn't gonna turn this pitching staff around. They need 2 quality SP and about 3 RP...along with the hopeful continued growth of Richards as a full time starter

We don't know for sure what the money situation is though. If it's all about the luxury tax, this year it will be impossible to get 2 quality SP  and 3 RP and stay under the tax unless Dipoto turns into a magician. The extra draft pick would have been nice in case he turned it down.

that seems reasonable to me.  the guy isn't a real difference maker, and you have to draw the line somewhere in a negotiation.
