Angels renew Trout @ 510K. Agent mad?

It doesn't have to work that way, and often doesn't work that way.  Ask Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Ryan Braun, Tim Salmon, and others.

And none of those guys got paid with 4+ years of team control left, either.

They did.

Derek Jeter - $550k second year. $130k rookie year.

Albert Pujols - $600k second year.  $200k rookie year.

Ryan Braun - $1.03m second year. $455k rookie year.

Tim Salmon - $600k second year. $127.5k rookie year

There is a reason why it's called "team control". Because the team gets to control how much a player makes until his sixth year.

Let's put it another way: If you do a really good job at work, how much raise do you usually expect the following year?

I'd say that 4% is more generous than most raises anyone on this list gets from year to year...

Perhaps, Trout's agent made a big deal out of this to show his client he wants what's best for him. You don't think every agent in the free and unfree world is hounding Trout to switch to them?

Trout and Harper are primed to secure Arod+ lifetime earnings that will probably be more than $500,000,000.00 when they retire. What agent wouldn't want a cut out of that?!?!

Even under Arte's regime, second year players have usually gotten more.

Weaver -  385k to 435k (minimum went up 10k)

Santana - 350k to 425k (minimum went up 9k)

Kendrick - 395k to 432k (minimum went up 10k)

Aybar - 382.5k to 415k (minimum went up 10k)

Trumbo - 414k to 500k (minimum up 66k, so same amount as Trout's raise, more as a percentage)

Bourjos - same as Trumbo

Willits - 382.5k to 432.5k (minimum up 10k)

Napoli - 395k to 425k (minimum up 10k)

Exactly. Bottom line is...he'll get shown the money. Lots of it.

Just not yet.

3 of those were long ago when owners were more idiotic than they are now

Braun was renewed @ $455,000 before signing an 8-yr deal.  He made $380,000 his rookie season

So, Trout is making more money than all of these plays are/did during their second year?

Sweet. Congrats on the raise Mike!

Its not a great comparison to the average career, but if Joe Schmoe is outperforming everyone in the industry and gets far less of a raise than the best comps have gotten in recent years, I think Joe Schmoe would be a bit disappointed.
