Perry Minasian: "We are prepared to go into Spring Training with what we currently have"

I would not read too much into his comments.  It is political-speak - he is saying he likes the team he has now and doesn't feel we need to make further moves, but also leaves the door open for the possibility of an addition.

And, he's right - most projection systems indicate we should be in the thick of most races.

Still, I would expect him to make a few low-key, under-the-radar signings either way.  Maybe not a Paxton/Odorizzi/etc, but needed depth.

Angels are a much deeper team. Not much better at front of rotation, but deeper on rotation and outfield should injuries happen.

Would be nice to see them add one of Odorizzi, Paxton, Walker or Rosenthal.

Overall I'm excited to get the season going and watch Detmers, Adell, Marsh, Lagares and Rivera show what they can during Spring Training.

Crazy talent with those names

What can Lagares show that will be different than the rest of his career? He would have to beat out Ward for a bench spot. Considering that Arte appears to have cut off spending, Lagares cost way more than Ward with defense as his primary worth. The Angels have better alternatives than Lagares namely Marsh and Adell.

As for Minasian being done, I give him a D for his first foray into an offseason as GM. Acquiring Cobb was absurd when considering what was available at the time, same goes for Fowler. The Iglesias deals were very good and Quintana is a good innings eater. He has failed to add another late innings reliever and the rotation is still a huge question mark. The bench pieces he has added all belong in a Senior’s home.

With all that said, ST starts in just five days and I can’t wait. I hope I am wrong and the acquisitions all work out. I desperately want the Halos to win.

Perry Minasian just shot himself in the foot. I don't know how much the rest of you know about Angels baseball culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Atlanta where you can become successful by being an a******. If you screw a fanbase over in Anaheim by not making a big offseason splash, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance. What this means is the Angels fanbase, after hearing about this, is not going to want to support the Angels, nor will they watch any games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Perry Minasian has alienated an entire market with this move. Perry Minasian, publicly apologize and resign or you can kiss @floplag and @RendZone goodbye.

ive no idea what the point of this is or why i was mentioned, lol

I think he was doing a parody of a previous rant someone made about ohtani and disrespecting the culture of japanese baseball.

It was a parody of his own previous rant about all that.

While he's most likely done, remember Bill Stoneman said he was done and close to the end of spring training he made the Edmonds for AK and Bottenfield trade.

I think he was also done in the winter of 04-05 after signing Colon, Guillen and Escobar but they changed course when Vlad became more affordable...so there is that to balance out the Edmonds trade...

Very political. If you say you're not satisfied and we're not done adding, the FAs you are talking to know they have the leverage. I am sure he truly does believe they could go into the season with this roster; however, I am sure they have some offers out to guys. If I'm an agent of a guy they've talked to, I see this and advise my guy they're not upping their offer. Only an dunce would tell the media, "We really need another pitcher or two." Better to deal with some fan angst than get held over a barrel by an agent.

I would normally agree, but I truly do think there's something they see in Cobb and Fowler.

Cobb is a groundball specialist and pitching staff captain. Getting him out of the AL East, back with Maddon and I'm the thick of a division race will rejuvenate him.

And Fowler it's a clubhouse leader as well, and definitely makes an ideal platoon partner with someone like Ward that can hit lefties. And Minasian really likes what he saw from the off-season workouts, whatever that means.

These acquisitions have the potential to make Minasian look very intelligent, and also very stupid.

Kent f'n Bottenfield.

That was a lopsided trade but I just went and looked up AK's stats.  He was a fairly consistent and good player for the halos.  Way better than I remember for some reason.

And FWIW, AK solidified a position we had nothing at for years before him. 2B was a merry go round.

And as far as edmonds, if i remember correctly, he was coming off an injured year, and was a FA that winter.

I think we'd all prefer edmonds. But I kind of understand it. I dont think he was super popular w the team either, but i could be wrong about that

Perry Minasian spoke to the media on Zoom today, and it seems like he's done with the roster. In addition to him saying that they're "prepared to go into Spring Training with what we currently have" the fact that he had this Zoom call today sure seems like an end of offseason type Zoom call. Now, I obviously wasn't on the Zoom call so maybe that wasn't the reason for it, but it sure seems like it.

On the possibility of adding more to the roster before Spring Training:

"Never say never. There's a possibility that we could add to the current group we have. But we are prepared to go into Spring Training with what we currently have, we feel like we've upgraded the roster in a lot of different areas over the course of the offseason, so is it a possibility? Yes. Will it actually end up happening? We'll see."

I'm sorry. This is disappointing.

It seems like Maddon is really the one who's sticking his neck out with Cobb and Fowler behind the scenes since they both played for Maddon. In the public, it may look like Minasian sticking his own neck out, but I don't think it is.

I'm still trying to figure out the paradox of players who played for Maddon want to play for him again and Epstein's conclusion he was not good for the Cubs.

Players tell the truth.  I am glad Joe is with the Angels.  It's where he belongs.

2B had been a complete mess from the moment Grich retired until AK showed up.

Are we going for the record of most diverse range of reactions to a single post here? If so I'm in

Minasian is just saying what he should be saying. If he says "we still need to add to the roster before I feel confident going into spring training" it shows potential suitors like Paxton or Rosenthal that we are desperate and the price goes up.

He is perfectly fine not adding anyone, but will do so if the opportunity presents itself. That's basically what every GM does all winter.

Spring training hasn't even started. I doubt that there won't be some changes. Likely minor, but you never know.

Once they hit the field perceptions may change. Some players may look better or worse than anticipated. Injuries are a possibility. The same with all teams. I would be very surprised if another pitcher isn't acquired. Probably an aging veteran on a low one year contract who will be scouted during spring training.
