Crow and Pina pitching well in AFL

None of the Angels hitters in the AFL are doing anything at all, unfortunately.

Jeremiah Jackson: .146/.200/.293.  2 BB/16 K in 45 PA.

Orlando Martinez: .195/.214/.268 only 1 BB in 42 PA--but also only 6 K.

Anthony Mulrine is 1 for 25 (a single) with 3 BB and 9 K.

Is the AFL mainly pitching oriented?

Nope.  League ERA is 6.15 and the league batting slash line is .266/.377/.425.  Glendale, which is the team the Angels' players are on, has a team slash line of .253/.339/.413--so maybe their park plays like less of a hitters' park than others do, but the Angels' hitters are still way below even that average.

Other side of the coin...
Jackson's most important thing right now is simply staying on the field and getting reg ABs.
Martinez is R5 eligible; I don't want them to protect him, but also don't want to lose him, and poor performance in AFL only helps that scenario.
Mulrine's much more defense oriented, so not surprised.

The Angels have struck a minor league deal with outfielder Aaron Whitefield, reports SKOR North’s Darren Wolfson. The 25-year-old Whitefield signed with the Twins out of his native Australia back in 2015 and had been a staple in their minor league ranks since. The speedster is coming off a decent Double-A campaign in 2021 where hit .257/.327/.353 but with a tantalizing number of steals (36, in 48 attempts) and centerfield-capable defense. He’ll now serve as a depth option for a Los Angeles team that is frequently beset with injuries and look to get called up to the Majors for the first time since a three-game cameo with Minnesota in 2020.

Kinda wild, 6'4" and 210 but way more of a speed/stolen base guy above anything else.

Biggest AFL surprise? Like completely out of nowhere. -- @GenerallyManage

On the pitching side, how about Coleman Crow with the Angels? He’s tossed eight innings for Glendale and given up just one run on six hits, walking two and striking out 12. His 6.0 K/BB ratio is among the best in the league. He’s only 20 as a high school draftee in 2018 who got an over-slot $317,500 to sign in the 28th round in 2019. He hadn’t pitched above Low-A prior to his AFL experience, but has a two- and four-seam fastball, a solid slider and even a changeup that works to make him kind of intriguing.
