Been to KC many times and have gone to many Royals games. I have never heard the term "Crowns" used, even on their merch. The only time I saw something like that was I saw a shirt with something like "Take the crown", but it was a shirt with regards to them winning the WS in '15.

Man, the things that people get hung up on.  It reminds me of buttercup, the rally monkey, and play by play announcers, and whatever other things people get annoyed with.

At least it isn't as corny as "Bronx Bombers" or "Bean Town Knob Goblins" or whatever the Red Sox go by.
