Thanks Jeff! I actually started at bbref since I do pay, but didn't think to do it that way. Based on specifically requiring that you had to suck, bad, in the 1st half, I'd take out the 10 of first 25 that ended up with 900+ overall. I'd consider those "fine first half, monster second half guys," a little different than what I wanted. So, based on some back of the envelope math, Calhoun has an outside shot at landing in that 10-15 range all time. Would be awesome!

You’d do the same thing I did, but search for first halves below, say, a .550 OPS and then do it in reverse, for the largest negative difference from their overall OPS.

Yep!  Just hadn't gotten around to it yet, but thanks for the push, just did.  Same criteria as my first post, but goes back 30 years now (BBRef only allows 300 records to be exported at once, from what i can tell, so still limited it, but at least tripled the seasons included).  Kole still leading, but obviously when you see 5 of the top 11 from this year in limited time, no guarantee it'll hold up.  Kole's 80+ PA of keeping this up along with his massive lead over Clayton's 2011 full season gives me hope, though!

damn, this is great work. appreciate your effort.  what Kole has done since returning from his coughinjurycough has been remarkable.

(now do best-to-worst)

Ask and ye shall receive, thanks to @Jeff Fletcher recommendation on how to do it faster.  Last 30 years, reverse logic.  Our old friend Brennan Boesch says, "wuts up?"

No player has both a worst to best and a best to worst season, though Jermaine Dye comes closest in 2007 (huge rebound) and 2009 (fell off a cliff). His 2007 first half was sub 700 but not below my sub 650 criteria.

From -1.2 WAR to 0.1 WAR thats incredible.

It sounds bad because of the starting point for sure. I think of it as he has +1.3 over basically a month, which would translate to a 7-8 WAR season if done all year. Sucks the first part had to happen, but the rebound has been crazy.

Kole's Troutian July with his AL Rankings:

Runs 4th

2B 6th

Home Runs 1st!!!

RBI 2nd

Total Bases 3rd

Extra Base Hits 1st!!!

OPS 2nd

Slg Pct 1st!!!

He may not get player of the month because Jose Ramirez & Khris Davis had great months as well, and are on contending teams, but it was sure fun to watch.

My favorite moment was on July 13 when they were playing the Dodgers. I was listening on XM in the car, so I was forced to listen to the Dodgers' radio feed. Their color guy was explaining how, with his new batting stance, Kole was going to be able to get more plate coverage, but he was not going to be able to "drive the ball". About two pitches later, Kole hit his first of two home runs in the game, and hit another one against the Dodgers in the next game.

Had he played the first half like he has after his DL stint it would probably have been an added 4+ wins for the Angels.

Wouldq, coulda, shoulda but, if that happened, richards and ohtani stayed healthy, and middleton didnt get hurt, this team would look totally different in the standings right now. Not houston good, but definitely in a playoff run.

The Angels desperately need Kole to be a consistent threat next year. He doesn't have to be this good. He needs to do what he did from 2013-2017. Hit .260, 20-25 homers, play good defense. Shouldn't be asking for too much for a guy that obviously has the talent he has. He is one of those guys you count on to extend the lineup. He shouldn't be the leadoff or cleanup hitter but theoretically is a great 6th or 7th hitter in a lineup.

One less hole to fill than we thought we had a month ago. Bridges the gap to Adell.

Allows us to spend more on pitching and an upgrade at catcher.

We are talking about Calhoun's contribution. His problems weren't injury related unless you can call having a brain cramp an injury. All things the same, his change in swing, which the problem dated back to last year, could have been a season changer even with all of the other issues outside of Calhoun's control.

Update on Kole's comeback for the ages:

Past 154 at bats since returning from the DL on June 22:  .292/.408/.637/1.045, 14 HRs, 33 rbis, 9 doubles, 1 triple

Previous 173 at bats saw a .374 OPS, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 11 rbis

OPS has jumped from .374 to .669 in only about 7 weeks.

Kole is having the month that @JustATroutFan promised Trout would have in May.

Kole Calhoun after his 3 for 4 night last night is now up to a 1.1 bWAR on the season.  Simply amazing.  He has been so good that when I saw over his last 28 days he was hitting like .285, I thought for sure it was something higher.  If he wants to end the year a .250 hitter he will have to hit about .330 the rest of the way.  While I don’t think that will happen, it is crazy to think he will hit probably close to .235 this season and give us damn near a 2 WAR season.  I certainly hope this new stance continues to give him success going into next year.  If it doesn’t they Angels will almost certainly pick up his option or trade him at the deadline next year.

His July was crazy.  I wonder if Eppler passed him through waivers just to give himself the opportunity to see what his value is given his 2nd half.
