Angels Pursuing Ohtani

There’s going to be a lot of rumors coming out about the guy, where he’d like to play, what he values, what kind of team mate he is, what his “demands” are prior to signing with a team.  Most of those things won’t be remotely true, yet will sway opinions on here. Don’t be that guy.  Being that guy is almost as bad as being the guy that tries to subtly tell us why he won’t pick us.  We all know it’s somewhat of a long shot.  I would put our chances around 10-15%.  We’re top 7 in money and Eppler is a pretty bright guy, plus location and Trout.  We have a chance, it’s just not quite the chance the Dodgers, Yankees and Mariners have.

I’m sure that Eppler sent his newly hired assistant to greet him at the airport.

Interesting if true, but ultimately not that meaningful for us. Unfortunately I don't speak Japanese so I can't confirm here.

If it’s true then more than likely the other two teams are in the group of Cubs, Seattle, Giants and Angels.  I’d put money on West Coast teams.

I doubt this is true.

@Stradling I actually do believe that he’s seriously considering the Angels. Eppler scouted him when he was a Yankees executive. Who wouldn’t want to play with best player in the world that doesn’t carry a huge ego. If Pujols can actually play first base or be willing to take a step back to open up opportunities that would be a plus.

I hate to burst bubbles but I really think it will be between the Dodgers and Yankees.

Dodgers beat out the Angels in talent on the field and in the minors plus have gone to the playoffs six seasons in a row with one World Series and are set to repeat. They also have a history that most Japanese ballplayers know of, the Angels have really no Japanese pressence.

Yankees beat the Angels with their history alone but also the talent on the field and first class facilities. You can't beat the Yankees if you want the be the most talked about player in baseball and they will pay to keep that player. It doesn't hurt that they are perrinial playoff contenders in a division that favors hitting. They also have ties with former Japanese players and have Matsui in the front office to pave the way.

Scrap up all the reasons the Angels are a potential candidate and this other two teams wipe them out.

I think we are 1 of the two unknown team simply due to Eppler getting the intl bonus just before ohtani gets posted.  Its interesting that billy has been quite about Ohtani and most fan's( except for me) weren't buying into the idea of getting ohtani until now.

Considering that Ohtani is younger, much much cheaper and pitches and hits, I don’t see why any team would do that.

Also, it would be a pretty crappy thing to do to Ohtani, and certainly not received well in the player/agent world.

I was just kidding, trying to keep the stanton threads going.

That said, im still hesitant on what to expect from this guy. He may hit, but how well? He may pitch, but how well? And so in regards to him versus stanton or any other bonafide star player, at this point its really on the age part that makes him interesting.

Put it like this, if he comes over and is cy young, but only pitches part time because of whatever weird setup they have for him to hit, hes not a better sign than another standout pitcher. If he has an ops+ of 150, but only 200 at bats because of some weird setup they have for him to pitch, same thing.

With the cost involved to sign Ohtani, it seems there are no negatives. Let him try to pitch and hit. If he flops as a hitter, use him exclusively as a pitcher. If he flops at both hitting and pitching, trade or release him. The Angels have been burned before signing free agents, but the risk is only $1.3 mil.  They have paid journeyman RP'ers more. To me, it all looks like there is nothing but upside to this.

The risk is actually $21.3 million (including posting fee), but worth it.

So Ohtani is in LA and so is Mike Trout because his Eagles are practicing here.

I wonder if Eppler sets up a meeting between Trout and Ohtani?

Marketing pitch... We would like to boast having the best two players in our country and Japan's on the same team -- quite frankly the best two baseball players on planet.
