Putting the military on the border is literally engaging in war. It's the military.

Plus, that means pulling those assets from other areas, and retraining and equipping them for an entirely new mission. They're the military, not the Border Patrol.

Good grief, plenty of countries use military to guard their borders.  Besides, would you prefer them to lose their jobs?  Do you really care if they get pulled from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria?  Do you care if they scale back their presence in Japan or Europe?

I sure in the hell don't.  We should be doing that and if we can find a place for them to stay in the military (if they want to) all the better.

You have a lot of "don'ts", what is your solution to the border situation?

I would keep doing what we're currently doing because it's working.

and it has been since that chart's beginning point.

So doesn't make the recent trend relevant as a share of overall population, especially since the distribution indicated by the information indicates a changing distribution relative to how long the people making up that population have been in the country?

I'd bet some of the recent trend in illegal immigration was due to the mortgage crisis.  When the economy tanked a lot less money was getting sent back to Mexico which in recent years was their largest source of foreign income.  The wall is ridiculous but something needs to be done.  Under Reagan 3M illegals were given amnesty and that was supposed to be the end of it.  30+ years later here we are looking at another 11M+ in the country illegally while the feds have failed to secure the border.
