Why not Cespedes?

Trout was incredible with RISP this year. They absolutely need someone who will get on before him.

He was great with RISP and fewer opportunities batting 3rd (126 PA) than he was as a rookie batting leadoff (135 PA). That is how absolutely pathetic the leadoff and #2 hitters were getting on base in front of him.

So an instant upgrade to the Angels scoring is not another big bat that swings at everything to jog four bases once every 6 games but a couple of guys that know how to not swing and walk 90 feet from home plate every game.

Trout is the "Big Bat" so give him opportunities.

If the Angels choose to sign one of the big name guys for the OF this off-season, the smartest move is Heyward due to his age, defense, speed and ability to get on base.  He would be excellent hitting in the #2 spot in front of Trout.  All of his numbers would go up.

I still prefer the Angels signing Fowley which would leave enough money for Zobrist/Murphy for second base.

Cespedes is a game changer type of player --

never understood why the A's traded him for rental Lester when they did -- and when they did -- the A's who were playing so well with Cespedes in the line up became a completely different team and the bottom fell out.

This year the Mets pick up Cespedes and leads them down the stretch to the NL East title.

Meanwhile, Halos picked up three so-so rentals, Dejesus, Victorino and Murphy -- all decent acquisitions but not Cespedes quality player -- and Cespedes was really sort of the Mets' third or fourth choice after some other proposed deals fell through.

Cespedes is a guy I would spend some money on.

Unless there's something we don't know -- and what many suspected when Billy Beane dumped Cespedes the way he did -- that he was going to be some how be named in the steroids investigation and suspended -- that didn't happen and it looks now that it won't.  That was the only way I could make sense of Billy Beane dumping Cespedes the way he did.

My fear though is, we spend $20+ million on Heyward, and find we still need a bat to hit people in.  Heyward will not score runs for the Angels.  He has never in his career been a run producer.  And the Angels need people that can score runs.  You can walk and get to first all you want.  But it's been decades since this team was a runnyball first to third to home team.

We need someone that will hit Trout in, and not someone that will get on before Trout.  Trout advances him.  And Pujols ends the inning.

Again, IMO, you do not spend $20 million over 5+ years on a #1 or #2 hitter.  You do not spend $20 million on a hitter that in the past does not hit above a .800 OPS.

This is just not grounded in reality. The Angels more than any time I can remember struggled to put runners on base at the top of the order.

Who is Fowley?

If you mean Dexter Fowler, sure, get him. He'd be cheaper than Heyward/Cespedes and that saves money for Price/Greinke/Cueto.

However, Fowler will be entering his age 30 season in 2016.

Unless you're AO, signing a solid player who turns 30 going into the 2016, is still a good signing.
