salary dump, pure and simple.

Halos erase $9.2 million from payroll for Howie in his contract year, a contract the Halos probably couldn't/ wouldn't extend and then be unable to re-sign him.

Kendrick will get a decent pay day for his next contract and as for all guys at his age and number of years in the league, would the new contract reflect payment for performances to date or for future performance???

the Halos figured, we can't keep Howie, we are not going to pay him a 'thank for your service' type over-payment contract for 2016 --so now is the time to get some pitching help which will be under club control for about five years.

you can not get a top 20 prospect in a trade and call that trade a salary dump, especially when the salary you're dumping is 9.5 mlb dollars.

I asked and was told that Heaney will be in the rotation this season and that a rotation spot is his to lose/keep.  The Angels, as much as they like Tropeano, didn't trade for Heaney just to let him "develop" more in AAA.  They think he's good to go and Dipoto prefers the "look" Santiago gives the Angels bullpen dynamic.

It seems to me, that at the start of the season we're looking at Weav, Shoemaker, Wilson, Heaney and Tropeano.  Once Richards returns, Heaney will be in the 5th spot, Tropeano goes to AAA.  Santiago and ramos will be used not only as a 6th and 7th inning option, but also long relief and in lefty-on-lefty match ups.

I have to admit, the Angels might be right about Hector.  He's pretty good in the rotation, but he can also shorten a game and make the Angels even more lethal than they already are.

The competition/depth in starting pitching should be good in 2015.  Tropeano, Heaney, and Santiago will all compete for one spot: 5th starter.  Whoever has the lowest ERA will start.  Santiago can move to the pen.  Both Tropeano and Heaney have options.

Great flexibility and depth that was so desperately needed these past several years.

Hopefully there is now no longer a need to sign a Blanton type.

This is a nice team that JeDi has put together.

This.

I really like the way he has set up the SP and BP with young arms.

Now he needs to start bringing in some young bats. Keep building the farm.

Still stoked at what Dipoto has done with the staff. Setting them up well, especially after 2016 when both Weav and CJ are off the books. We see how crazy the market is for pitchers in FA. Dipoto has shrewdly been stockpiling young, cheap arms for the long haul. Likely get better bang for your buck with them

Richards won't become a FA until 2019

Shoemaker won't become a FA until 2021

Rasmus won't become a FA until 2021

Skaggs won't become a FA until 2020

Heaney won't become a FA until 2021

Tropeano won't become a FA until 2021

Santiago won't become a FA until 2018

All of these guys under club control for quite a while. That doesn't even include their 1st rd pick from this past year in Newcomb(and all their other arms they are stockpiling like Gatto, Ellis, Sanchez, etc). Makes sense to build like this and when they do spend big, spend it on a bat because there is less risk with hitters than there are with pitchers generally.

CJ is tradable as long as they are willing to pick up some of his contract and it won't be as much as people on here think it would have to be. If the Angels picked up $8 million that leaves CJ at two years $30 million. Last year he was bad, but he has a track record of success and worse pitchers have gotten more for longer.
