LA Times: Angels owner Arte Moreno should share vision of future with Mike Trout

Angels franchise player Trout needs to weigh in as Moreno mulls what moves, if any, to make with GM Jerry Dipoto and Manager Mike Scioscia. Budget limits, tension and futility all come into play.

Before Arte Moreno resolves the cold war between Jerry Dipoto and Mike Scioscia, the Angels' owner ought to invite Mike Trout to lunch.R2H27YkfoP4

"However, from conversations with people inside and outside the organization, the sense is that Dipoto is more likely to go, which would put Moreno in the same awkward position as he was two years ago — hiring a general manager who would not get to bring in his own manager.

In that case, the best solution might be Bud Black, the manager of the San Diego Padres. Black worked in the Cleveland Indians' front office for five seasons, then joined the Angels as Scioscia's pitching coach for five seasons. Moreno would not have to wonder whether his GM and manager would get along; they already do.

Black knows pitching on a budget. And Black would be comfortable saying no to Moreno and to Scioscia; Black said no when the Boston Red Sox were interested in pursuing him for what would have been his first managerial job. It would help if the Angels could find a way to bring back former closer Troy Percival as a coach, to help enliven the clubhouse and sharpen the accountability there."

I don't think anybody sees this as a realistic possibility, but do you guys think this would work out if Bud Black was to takeover the GM job?

The Padres picked up Black's option for 2014 and 2015.  He's not coming here.  It's that simple.

Nice legwork there, LA Times.

Yup. It's was picked up last Nov. I guess it's still possible that's he's fired, but it's very unlikely.

Right now if I were Trout, I'd have serious concerns about the direction of this franchise.  Since Arte has taken over his GM hires don't look good.  People grouse about Stoneman, but that was a GM who knew how to assemble a team and staff.  We can look at this team now and say all we need is pitching, but it might not be that easy.

I am praying the Angels sign Mike to a long term deal.  But I don't think it will happen unless Arte gets his act together.  He's a great owner when he's sticking to the big picture, the beer prices, stadium condition, and happiness of the fans.  Just needs to stay the @$!# out of the baseball operations.

Definitely read the article. Here is a sample:

Baseball America ranked the Angels' minor league system the worst in the game last winter. John Manuel, editor in chief of Baseball America, said the Angels' system might well be ranked worst again this winter.

"They need help everywhere," Manuel said. "It's like one of those big ships going in the wrong direction. It's hard to turn those things around. The Astros, in the same division, have been much worse at the big-league level, but they're turning around faster."

More proof Scioscia really was the real GM during the Reagins disaster:: " Scioscia was asked to step aside as unofficial director of player personnel."

Both Jerry and Mike need to be removed. Hire a good GM with his own people and let him hand pick his manager. Give them 4 to 5 years to turn this franchise around.

Dipoto improved the team prior to the 2012 season.  The existing players that he inherited failed.

His moves sucked this year.

If he gets fired, then Arte is essentially telling any other GM that applies for the job

1.  They can't bring in their own manager

2.  The owner may have a large role in deciding who to spend FA money on and therefore there will be limits to what they control

3.  They basically have 1 season to get the team to a championship level with this limited control, and even if they improve the team one year and the owner limits what they can do the next, if they make some bad moves and the team takes a step back they are gone.

seems reasonable.  good luck to the next guy.

Why would dipoto get two years, and the next guy 4-5?

You hire someone better. Look if you fire Mike then your basically saying Jerry has one year to turn it around or he's next. If you fire Jerry then the next GM can't pick his guy as manager and it's a cluster. If you fire both u have a refresh. This front office has made Jerry only get two years. Because what Arte Jerry and Mike have produced with tensions and just a terrible way to run a franchise. If Jerry was brought in. Given his say on team decisions and mike was fired then he prob would get at least another year. But Arte has screwed up the whole system.

Yup. A GM should always be able to pick their own manager.

If Arte fires Dipoto and retains Scioscia the problems in the organization will only be magnified. So obviously this is what the owner will do.

Very negative article.  I responded to him via e-mail.  The team was wracked with multiple injuries during this season and is closer to being a good team than he states.  This current roadies shows that the rotation is working and the bullpen is finally able to do the job as hired (the now come in the 7th inning instead of the 4th or 5th).  And, finally the farm has three teams in the post season and is showing signs of developing some nice players.

Eff the doom and gloom.

Trout could be the first player to wear an Angels cap in Cooperstown, if he sticks around. He could have won the most valuable player award in each of his first two seasons, if not for the Angels' futility.

What? This year Cabrera is blowing Trout out of the water at the plate. There is little chance at all that Cabrera is not winning the MVP for a second season in a row.

It's a good thing it's the Most Valuable Player award and not the Most Valuable Hitter award then, huh?

1. Small sample size.

2. The Brewers 1-8 is hardly quality wo/ Braun, Weeks, Hart...

To much emphasis on Trout here ... we still have him locked up for four years. Trout may be the best position player but it's still a team sport. Yes, you try to lock him up but you do it to save money through his arbitration years.

Until he can drive in 130+ rbi's and score 130+ runs I would not break the bank on him just yet. .
