Albert Pujols released...

Anyone else think the FO told Albert he could either retire or he'd be released?

I'm sure they sat down with him to discuss it. In the end though, there is no reason for Albert to retire and walk away from ~$25 million. Given the decision to not play him anymore, I think it's likely that the release was his choice.

Probably something along those lines.  I don't see the FO just releasing him unprovoked since they're paying his salary anyways and it's his farewell season.  Was probably a mix of Minasian wanting to push him out of the lineup due to his abysmal play along with Albert's ego either getting in the way and/or feeling disrespected.

Either way, the big league club is better off for it.

Nobody can feel sorry for Albert.  He played this year totally wrong.  Despite his reputation as a team guy it is clear Albert is out for Albert.  He wants to hit 700 home runs, doesn’t matter how shitty he is otherwise.  That is a totally selfish move.

the right move should have been announcing his retirement at the beginning of the season.  Accept limited playing time because, you know, he sucks now.  And gotten the mlb tour send off that great players get.

he looks like a whiny baby right now. Oh and alberts “mentor ship” of trout has nothing to do with his greatness, that is overblown hot air.

good riddance.

Or the team will fall apart and Trout will demand a trade after losing his mentor and friend.

Yeah too bad Pujols isn’t here now to “mentor” Trout from his current state of being the best player in the world to the best player in the universe.

If Pujols is in any way still an actual mentor to Trout it is in the relationship, not on the field, so why would Trout not still have that?

If he doesn’t play anymore he’ll finish his career at 87.0 WAR, 28th all-time, third highest among first basemen (not counting Musial) behind only Gehrig and Foxx.

Of course only about 5.6 of that is with the Angels. Hard to get over the fact that he averaged 0.6 WAR per year as an Angel. They paid him to be Gehrig and he was Quinlan.

The DFA is largely a formality, as Pujols and the remainder of his $30MM salary will go unclaimed on waivers. It’s possible the Halos could work out some kind of trade where they effectively eat all of that salary, but a release is most likely. Pujols is in the final season of a 10-year, $240MM contract.

Fixed it

Trout's not a moron, I'm sure he sees the writing on the wall with Albert's performance.  If he really cares about the team making the playoffs and starting to turn things around, he has to know that Pujols in the lineup is not part of that plan.

Top 3 post in this discussion.
