It's always awkward in these scenarios. A long time great player at the end of the road. Tough knowing how to deal with the situation when he becomes an obvious liability.

Ideally they go out in a blaze of glory like Ted Williams. Homered last time at bat after a .300 season. Rarely happens. 

Albert hung on too long. Sadly, it came to the stage of embarrassing himself. Not as bad as Willie Mays, but nearing that territory.

He really should have quit two years ago. For someone with his pride he should have seen the writing on the wall before becoming a caricature of his better baseball self.

Too bad he leaves the Angels in such a humiliating way. He never justified his Angel contract, but he was productive for a few years before really hitting the skids. 

In the baseball world his Angels career will quickly be forgotten and glossed over as his Cardinal era self will be celebrated.

At the time his career Batting AVG was above .300 also he will still get there 1st ballot. But, I would had walked then.

I guess as an Angels fan I’m happy this decision has finally been made and we can move on and improve the hitting. As a baseball fan I’m sad that it’s happened like this and not on his own terms, but glad we can celebrate such a special career 

Players of Albert's caliber all have a chance to go out on their own terms. Sticking around 5 years past your expiration date means you gave that up. If he was making league minimum on a non-guaranteed contract he's probably gone back in 2016 or sooner.

This is exactly it. If he had signed a 6 year deal with the Angels, he would not have been playing major league baseball after 2017.
