Since AP likes setting records, could we make him the highest paid hitting coach of all time this year.

A lot of our hitters have no problem hitting into the shift, so I'm not really sure what Albert would add as our hitting coach.

In the old days they had special ceremonies for long time franchise favorites. Because salary was relatively paltry most players need off season jobs to supplement income.

Often at these ceremonies local businesses gave practical gifts. Appliances, vouchers for food and merchandise and so on. If they were lucky a dealership donated a car.

Albert will never be thought of as an Angel icon. Any ceremony they have for him will probably be modest, and reflect on his entire career. Which was amazing till he changed teams.

I expect a much bigger, extravagant ceremony in St Louis at some point after he retires. And some kind of more sedate special  recognition when he plays there as a visitor for the last time.

A lot of people are going to have negative feelings about Pujols time with the Angels and that’s fair because mostly the team sucked.  Not really Alberts fault.  Anyway.  I was excited when they got him.  He hit some dongs.  The time came and went.  Ah well.  Hopefully they do better with the money about to free up.

Unlike many here. I don’t hate AP. I am disappointed in the lack of production from him over his contract, but I don’t hate the guy at all.

he had one stolen the other night, but albert fouled off a pitch.  Albert fouling off pitches that Trout is stealing is the most consistent thing he does.

ANOTHER reason I hate Albert.  God, he is annoying.

I know we all say "30 mill". And to peons like us, it makes sense.

But especially as Ive gotten older. Personally, i would have walked away a few years ago, if I was him. And not for legacy purposes. But to go enjoy my life with the few hundred mill already in my pocket.

If I had 2 mill in the bank id retire today.

Cant put a price on never having to do anything ever again. And you cant get back time....

The difference of course is that when you talk about work you’re talking about having to go do something that is pretty low on your list of things you’d like to go do.  When Albert goes to work like during the season we’re talking about hanging out with the boys and playing baseball and traveling.  Yes, yes there is the training part and all that but also there’s the other stuff.  Oh, and the 30 million dollars.  To do that.  Also, he can effectively retire at age 47(he’s currently 46)

Yeah. Thats true. And Im sure its still fun to him.

But.... shit.... again...lol.... if it was me, and I simply had his St Louis money.... id be wearing out a yacht motor every year, and be on passport 38 by now.

I'm trying to imagine a scenario where anyone would actually offer him a contract for 2022. I suppose the only possibility is the Cardinals offering him a symbolic 1 year deal, but am not sure he'd accept what they'd be willing to pay him. And doesn't the service contract preclude that?

As I've said before, we're seeing something relatively new to baseball with players like Pujols, Cabrera, Votto, and Chris Davis. Their mega-contracts keep them playing beyond the point where they would have normally retired, in eras before the last 20-30 years. There have been long, even ten-year, contracts for over 40 years now -- the first being Wayne Garland, a reliever for the Indians who signed for 10/$2.3M for 1977-86. But today that would be equivalent to 10/$10M. Even Winfield's 10/$23M contract for 1981-90 equates only to 10/$66M now. Meaning, even including inflation, the top free agent contracts are about five times what they were 40 years ago (I'm guessing that a 29-year old Dave Winfield would sign for something like 10/$300M now).

Pujols was done as an elite player even before he became an Angel, and done as a solid, starting-caliber player after 2015, 2016 if we're charitable and ignore advanced metrics. In 20th century baseball, he would have retired after 2016, maybe 2017 if he wanted to give it one more go. Similarly with Cabrera: 2017 "should" have been his last year, and Votto is reaching the end of the line too. But in today's era, we get to watch formerly great players perform like replacement players, or even worse in Albert's case.

Chris Davis is in another category. He's been one of the worst major league regulars in baseball history over the last three years, with -5.1 WAR in 249 games. And the Orioles still owe him 2/$46M.

He will retire whether he wants to or not.  No team will want to use a valuable roster spot on Albert, even at the league minimum, who can’t play defense, can’t run, and can barely hit.

Id say they should get john goodman to play him in the movie, like he did babe ruth, but goodman lost too much weight to pull it off.
